Nest and Yale have been working together on a smart lock for a couple years now, but 2018 is the year it’s finally supposed to come out. Yale is announcing today that the Nest x Yale smart lock will be available for preorder starting next month, and will begin to ship in March. Pricing info still hasn’t been announced.

The Nest x Yale is a particularly sleek-looking lock since it completely does away with keys in favor of a touchpad and smartphone entry. It runs on batteries, and should they die, you can use another battery to jumpstart it from the outside so you can still get into your house.
The lock integrates with Nest’s security system
Of course, the big deal here is that it integrates closely with all of Nest’s smart home gadgets. It’s actually going to end up being more useful now than it would have two years ago, because it’ll integrate with Nest’s new home security system. The lock can actually be controlled from inside the Nest app, which Yale says is a first. It can also work in sync with Nest products to lock the door when people are away, disarm the security system when people arrive home, and let someone in after they ring Nest’s smart doorbell.
This lock has been in the works for an unusually long time. Back in a calmer era known as October 2015, the two companies announced that they were working on a lock called Linus that would integrate with Nest’s many smart home gadgets. That product never came out, and at some point its name was changed to Nest x Yale, as though it were a T-shirt collab. Now two years later, it’s finally close to being done.
