Motorola’s Moto G6 was absent from this week’s Mobile World Congress, thus missing the obvious annual refresh time frame after last year’s G5 was announced at the show. Presumably, the G6 and G6 Plus are still due sometime in the coming weeks; the series is known for representing perhaps the best value in midrange phones. During MWC, Motorola teased that something is on the way, but before the official unveiling, a Moto G6 Play phone has been leaked by Taiwanese certification agency NCC, as noted by TrendyTechz. (I don’t choose the blog names, people.)
Motorola’s Moto G6 Play leaked in regulatory filing
The company typically tacks “Play” onto a phone’s name to signal that it has long battery life, and that appears to be the case again here. The G6 Play is expected to have a 4,000mAh battery. That should provide pretty excellent endurance when paired with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 that’s allegedly inside. The overall look of the G6 Play continues the design shift that Motorola began with the Moto X4.
The 5.7-inch, 2:1-aspect display seen in the images has been shown to be a trend that’s part of Motorola’s other upcoming phones as well. It’s nice to see some bezel going away. That’s likely to be just an HD+ (1440 x 720) screen, so there’s yet another reason why this phone should deliver strong battery life: it doesn’t have to drive a fancy display. Trimming the bezels required moving the fingerprint reader to the back of the phone beneath the camera.
Other rumored details include the G6 Play running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, having a 16-megapixel camera, and coming in 32GB storage / 3GB RAM or 64GB / 4GB options. Yes, that looks like a Micro USB port on the bottom, and yes, this phone will have a headphone jack. Keep in mind its inexpensive, midrange target market. Stay tuned for more when Motorola gets around to actually introducing the G6, G6 Plus, and this G6 Play.
