In 2006, the last major American film was released on VHS: David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence. If a recent Kickstarter project succeeds, however, the format won’t be forgotten. Documentary Rewind This! interviews everyone from early VHS directors to people who still collect the tapes, covering the VHS vs. Betamax format wars, the effect of home video on filmmaking, and the current state of VHS. The trailer, available on the Kickstarter page, includes interviews with horror film host Elvira and cult director Lloyd Kaufman (The Toxic Avenger). Its team says the project is 90 percent completed, and pledges to put all funds raised towards either interview trips or post-production. They’ve raised $11,635 so far, out of a goal of $15,000.
