The market for butlers is increasing as emerging markets develop their own million and billionaires. But as the demand for butlers increases, there are conflicting thoughts about the proper standards of butling. Should such staff be silent, white-gloved figures in the classic Jeeves mold? Or should modern butlers be technologically-savvy multi-taskers, able to assist with business demands and odd requests? These changing standards are studied by The Wall Street Journal as it looks at a group of modern butler academies. It finds a divided industry, where some are taught to be on hand for their “principal” with phone chargers and condoms, while others instructed to tug on their toes to wake them up should they sleep too long.
