Rolling Stone has given us Lou Reed’s final interview, recorded a month before the rock legend passed away at the age of 71.

Reed sat down with director Farida Khelfa on September 21st to discuss his profound relationship with sound. During the course of the six-minute interview, the former Velvet Underground frontman and solo artist waxes poetic about sleeping with his guitar, the inexplicable nature of sound, and being moved to tears after he remastered his collection. According to Reed, “My life is my music.”

The conversation was taken as part of a photo shoot for Parrot, whose retro Zik headphones Reed reportedly consulted on to ensure they were suited for rock. He passed away on October 27th due to liver disease.
