Either way, Nintendo is reporting that it has sold 1.65 million 3DS units in the U.S. so far, putting it on track to beat the first year sales of its predecessor, the DS. As you're no doubt aware, the latter went on to become "the best-selling game system in U.S. history," as Joystiq notes. Then again, the DS was also a poor performer at first, so we'll have to see what impact the holidays have on the sale of the device.
