iPad

Only one tablet has survived the rise and fall of the tablet craze — mostly unscathed, that is— and that’s the Apple iPad. First launched in 2010, the original iPad mostly served as a larger iPhone, but without calling capabilities. And with no front-facing camera, you couldn’t even place video calls. Fast forward almost a decade and Apple’s tablet lineup are bonafide laptop replacements for some. Apple has adapted the iPad in form, function, and overall cost in such a way that it’s become the no-brainer tablet purchase.

Apple is probably skipping an October press event this year.

Mark Gurman said on The MacRumors Show podcast yesterday that he “thinks we might” get a new base model iPad in October, noting it tends to come annually, announced via video instead of an event (like the M2 Pro computers early this year).

He says a new iPad Air will come “soonish,” so that doesn’t sound likely for October. But hey, at least we might get those M3 iMacs.

This guy was so preoccupied with whether he could jam an iPad into an old iBook G3, he didn’t stop to think if he should.

Over on TikTok, creator Billy Skipper Hughes decided his iBook G3 needs to be an iPad in disguise, and I couldn’t be happier. It even has space for the Apple Pencil! And an Apple Watch charger!

It’s the greatest iPad case that ever was.

YouTuber Christopher Lawley asked developers and creators about their favorite features from WWDC 2023.

There are a lot of familiar faces in Lawley’s video if you like Apple-focused tech podcasts like many of those hosted by RelayFM.

It’s interesting what they’re looking forward to — Overcast creator and podcaster Marco Arment says SwiftUI code will be “way less error-prone,” while David Sparks of MacSparky called out what he says is much-improved dictation.

The iOS 16.6 beta is now out for public testing.

iOS 16.6 is in beta for public testers, just a few days after the iOS 16.5 update and 16.6 developer beta dropped on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Don’t expect to see any significant updates this close to the presumed announcement of iOS 17 at next month’s WWDC. It’s likely iOS 16.6 beta will mostly be testing small bug fixes.

The Brydge is over.

Brydge launched in 2012 with a mission of turning your iPad into a MacBook Air, but roughly a decade clear of its initial Kickstarter, the company has ceased operations.

9to5Mac has a report detailing Brydge’s internal culture, recent waves of layoffs, unpaid employees, and failed attempts at acquisition by peripheral competitors like Razer or Targus.

The addition of iOS trackpad support in 2020 — which was fully compatible with Apple’s Magic Keyboard but not Brydge — was another big problem. Apple Insider spoke to co-CEO Nicholas Smith, who said he believes “the new owners intend on fulfilling the outstanding orders.”
