iPhone

Over the past ten years, Apple’s iPhone has become the company’s most valuable —and recently, somewhat volatile— asset. Since its introduction in 2007, the iPhone helped to jumpstart the smartphone revolution, and with it came some big innovations. The App Store, touchscreen gaming, the mass adoption of social media, and protecting user data with biometrics. Its product lineup is enmeshed in Apple’s ecosystem, and the impact that it continues to have around the globe is vast.

Google Maps on iOS now automatically remembers where you parked.

The new feature was recently announced by Rio Akasaka, Google Maps’ senior product manager, as spotted by 9to5Google. You’ll need to first connect your iPhone to your car through USB, Bluetooth, or CarPlay, but when you’re done driving Google Maps will automatically save your vehicle’s location for 48 hours, or until you start driving again.

Apple hardware vp Johny Srouji reportedly tells staff “I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.”

After a string of exec departures from Apple, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported a few days ago that Srouji, who oversees the chips that have helped iPhones, Macs, and other devices lead their categories, had discussed leaving for another company.

Today, Gurman reports the exec sought to calm employees, sending a message to his division that said “I love my team, and I love my job at Apple, and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.”

You can already buy cheap copies of Apple’s $230 crossbody iPhone sock.

Both versions of the 3D-knitted iPhone Pocket quickly sold out earlier this month. Apple hasn’t announced any plans to restock the limited edition accessory created in collaboration with Japanese designer Issey Miyake, but there already plenty of reproductions on sites like AliExpress selling for much less than the real thing.

Vapor vs. Zoom.

The latest ads featuring Apple and Google’s mobile flagships could combine for a Nike football cleat and appeared within hours of each other today, before likely going into rotation over the holiday.

The Honor 500 looks Air-y familiar.

In Honor’s defense, the China-only 500 and 500 Pro aren’t especially thin phones, so they’re not cribbing on the iPhone Air in that sense. But that camera module has certainly been copying some of Apple’s homework.

Apple loses another notable industrial designer.

Abidur Chowdhury, who worked on the iPhone Air and introduced it during Apple’s September event, has reportedly left for an AI startup. Even though the phone hasn’t sold well, “his exit is unrelated to the debut of the phone, which has seen its design praised despite underwhelming sales,” according to Bloomberg.

Steve Jobs launches $29 iPod Socks.

This is the self-aware way Apple used to launch socks for its devices at a fraction of the cost of its new iPhone Pocket. I’m guessing it too, was inspired by “a piece of cloth.”

Better late than nev-Air.

Apple’s thinnest iPhone is finally launching in China next week, with preorders this Friday. The eSIM-only phone’s launch was delayed a month ago over regulatory issues to do with the electronic SIM cards, which aren’t widely available in the country.

Side note: this is how I found out Tim Cook has a Weibo account?

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe on why CarPlay still isn’t going to happen.

Last week, Ford CEO Jim Farley stepped up to the Decoder mic to explain why Ford isn’t offering CarPlay Ultra. Then this week, our friend Joanna Stern followed up with RJ Scaringe to discuss (again) why his company’s cars don’t have CarPlay support at all.

Apple releases minor iOS 26, macOS Tahoe updates with a few bug fixes.

There are fixes for bugs that some new iPhone 17 / Pro / Air owners have noticed, like wonky Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, as well as camera artifacts experienced “under certain lighting conditions.”

One iOS 26 issue addressed is blank custom tinted icons, plus one security flaw for a “maliciously crafted font.”
