Nintendo adds new 8-bit bops.

Switch Online subscribers can now access more than 200 new tracks from NES and Famicom games via the Nintendo Music app, including Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Wrecking Crew, and a handful of Donkey Kong titles. That gives you some retro tunes to listen to while playing Donkey Kong Bananza.

Chibi Metroid deserves to exist. Pretty please, Nintendo?

Ever see concept art and immediately say: “I would play the LIVING HECK out of that”?

Yeah. This is by Castpixel, and her portfolio is filled with fantastic pixel art (and more). She’s done work on Minecraft and Space Jam: A New Legacy and was sole artist on this $8 love letter to Bomberman. “If you can get Nintendo to hire me, it could be playable in 16 months or so,” she says of Chibi Metroid.

“the 3D corridor segments from Metroid Prime can totally be done as Marble Madness style levels,” she writes.

You can now apply to join Nintendo’s next Switch Online playtest.

The playtest, which will be a test of the “same service” as the one in October, will accept up to 40,000 on a first-come, first-served basis. You can apply here, though you’ll need to have been a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriber as of last Thursday as 6PM ET to be eligible.

Switch 2 is getting Cyberpunk 2077’s latest update sooner than expected.

CD Projekt Red had expected today’s Update 2.3 to hit Switch 2 at “a later date,” but now it’s rolling out “as we speak.“

The Switch 2’s latest update brings support for two great games.

Version 20.2.0 was released yesterday, and while the patch notes didn’t include much, following the update, Portal 2 and Crypt of the NecroDancer: Nintendo Switch Edition are now supported on the Switch 2, Eurogamer reports.

Now I have NecroDancer music stuck in my head.

A Pokémon Presents, you say?

Just a reminder: preorders for physical copies of Pokémon Legends: Z-A start on July 23rd, and on July 22nd, there’s going to be a new Pokémon Presents stream that’s probably going to reveal a bit more information about the game.

Big updates for the Nintendo Today app.

You can now get daily notifications for news and watch picture-in-picture video, according to the update notes. They’re good improvements for an app Nintendo actually uses for big news.

The FBI just shut down a Nintendo Switch piracy site.

NSW2U.com now displays a warning message that says it has been seized by the FBI in accordance with a warrant, as reported earlier by Kotaku. The site’s removal comes as Nintendo continues to zero in on emulators and pirated content, with the company now taking Switch 2s offline for using Mig cartridges and saying it will brick the console if players attempt to mod it.

The first working portable dock for Nintendo Switch 2 doubles as a 100W laptop charger and triples as a video capture card.

When I went hunting for working third-party Nintendo Switch 2 docks, I didn’t expect to find a gadget like this!

The AverMedia GC313Pro ain’t cheap at $120-$130, but how many USB-C charging bricks have this many functions? (There’s also a $80-$90 model if you don’t need video capture.) Here’s hoping Nintendo doesn’t lock it out with future Switch 2 updates. Note: If you buy something from our links, we might get affiliate revenue.

Nintendo created Donkey Kong’s biggest adventure by breaking everything

To make it, you gotta break it.

Switch 2 vs. Steam Deck OLED: Which is more powerful?

We have the early answer, thanks to Digital Foundry and Cary “The Phawx” Golomb, and... it’s so nuanced and intriguing I recommend you watch both videos yourself! But TL;DR:

 • Switch 2 plays Cyberpunk 2077 far better docked... but Steam Deck wins handheld.
 • Handheld, the Switch 2 is less stable; missing some detail; load times are slower.
 • Switch only uses around 1/3rd the power! But since Steam Deck has 2.5x the battery, both last around 2 hours.

Force feedback comes to the... Super Nintendo?

Working with Randal Linden, who helped bring Doom to the SNES in 1995, Limited Run Games has announced a new version of the game featuring improved graphics and additional levels. Two versions will be available for preorder on July 11th for $99.99 and $174.99 and will ship early next year.

LRG has also created a $34.99 wired SNES controller upgraded with a pair of rumble motors that vibrate in response to what’s happening in the updated game.

LRG’s SNES Rumble Controller will only work with Doom, but the company says it will work with other developers who want to add rumble support to their own retro games.
The Standard Edition of Doom includes an SNES cartridge with a metallic finish, retro-style packaging, an instruction manual, and a poster.
The Collector’s Edition of Doom includes an SNES cartridge with a metallic finish and blood splatter print and adds a foil box and a certificate of authenticity.

Can you spot an authentication chip in the Nintendo Switch 2’s dock?

While reporting out how the Nintendo Switch 2 breaks compatibility with third-party docks, I didn’t get enough from my USB sniffer to tell if there’s truly a special new encryption/authentication chip aboard the official one. But our friends at iFixit were kind enough to send over these incredibly clean, high-res photos of the dock’s circuitry. I don’t know what I’m looking for, but perhaps you might?

Obsbot will update its Tiny and Meet webcams for Nintendo Switch 2.

The Chinese company’s developing a reputation for quality compact webcams, and now it’s joining Elgato and Ugreen by updating them to work with the Nintendo Switch 2. None of the company’s cameras currently work, but the Tiny 2, Tiny 2 Lite, Meet 2, Tiny SE, and budget $69 Meet SE will all get the updates later this year, PR manager Rain Hu tells me. (Hu says our story helped!) Here’s a list of which webcams already work.
