Quibi

Quibi is short for “quick bites,” and as opposed to a whole meal, the snacks here are 10-minute videos that are meant to be consumed while you’re out and about in the world, possibly waiting in line for an actual snack. As the weirdest entrant in the streaming wars, Quibi boasts a couple of unique features: it comes with a pronunciation guide so you can say it correctly (kwib-ee), and it has Turnstyle, which lets the viewer switch between landscape and portrait video, offering two dimensions to a show. Founders Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman are betting big on Quibi as the on-the-go, mobile-only competitor — not only to other streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon, but also to user-generated social media sites like YouTube and TikTok. With a mountain of cash and a host of big names attached (Chance the Rapper, Chrissy Teigen, and Offset, to name a few), Quibi hopes to become a daily habit for millions of people. Follow The Verge’s coverage of the strangest — but also most original — streaming platform as it takes on, well, everybody.
