PlayStation

For more than 25 years, Sony’s PlayStation has been synonymous with gaming. It’s given players experiences like God of War, The Last of Us, and Final Fantasy VII alongside technological innovations from CD-ROMs all the way up to 4K, VR, and cloud gaming. There have even been attempts at portable gaming with the PSP and Vita. Across multiple generations the company has been a pioneer, starting with the original PlayStation and continuing with the PS5.

Final Fantasy father’s Fantasian is finally coming to PS5.

In 2021, Hironobu Sakaguchi released Fantasian — a luxuriously beautiful RPG that uses handmade dioramas for the game’s backgrounds — exclusively on Apple Arcade where it has remained sequestered to the lament of JRPG enthusiasts everywhere. During today’s State of Play, Sakaguchi announced that a console port of the game will debut on PS5 December 5th. The game is also coming to Switch, PC, and Xbox.

Lunar and Lunar 2, beloved old JRPGs, are coming to PC, Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation.

These good old games can cost serious money to play on genuine discs, even assuming you’ve got an old console — so it’s great Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete are coming back! Sony announced them today for PS4 and PS5 but they’ll hit Switch, Xbox and Steam too.

They’ll have “Updated visuals, widescreen mode, and more” when they arrive as the Lunar Remastered Collection, in spring of 2025. More details here.

Welp, that trailer’s going to give me nightmares.

A new gameplay trailer for Hell Is Us shows how you’ll have to go about defeating the faceless supernatural beings that have taken over your world. The game will come to PlayStation, Xbox Series X | S, and PC next year.

Fall started three days ago, y’know.

Astro Bot kicked off today’s State of Play presentation with a sneak peek at the game’s forthcoming DLC. We got a glance at snippets of the five new speedrun levels and the 10 new bots Astro will have to rescue including some Helldivers and Eve from Stellar Blade. Curiously, Team Asobi did not provide a release date for the DLC, sticking with the nebulous “Fall 2024” window.

PS5 Pro, but make it video.

I already showed you my hands-off photos, but here’s some video of Sony’s PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection and normal PS5 Pro too. You’ll see two different PS5 Pros in here, plus a throwback grey PlayStation Portal, DualSense, DualSense Edge, and PS5 Slim. No retro USB-C cable though; I asked!

Clearing the USB-Air on the PS5 Pro.

The PS5 Pro’s USB situation has baffled me. Sony showed CNET a console with one USB-A and one USB-C (in a USB-A cutout) on its rear, but a commenter mentioned a render on Sony’s site shows two USB-A.

Sony didn’t respond when I asked, but Sean’s photos confirm it’s two USB-A like prior models so I’ve updated our comparison.

You can’t convince me otherwise: this cable is the coolest part of Sony’s 30th Anniversary PlayStations.

“Unfortunately sick as hell” describes the whole package, but I’d even buy this cable solo.

Some retro reading.

If the announcement of the 30th anniversary edition PS5 has you feeling nostalgic, we have just the thing. Five years ago, when PlayStation turned 25, we put together a special issue looking at everything from the environmental impact of a PS4 to the influence of the original DualShock controller. There’s even a science story.

The PS5 Pro makes Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth look so much better.

Blame hardware, blame Square Enix — either way, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth forces you into a big graphical compromise on the PS5. It’s the one game I’d desperately like to play on the $700 PS5 Pro instead. Now, thanks to Digital Foundry, we all can.

The people want disc drives.

Wario64 spotted that the $79.99 PS5 disc drive is sold out on Amazon and Best Buy (via shipping). I’m seeing that it’s sold out at Target, too.

I’m guessing people are stocking up on the drives because the $700 PS5 Pro doesn’t come with one. But we also don’t know how many drives the retailers actually had on hand — perhaps it was just a few.

Locked in for the debate.

No, not that one — this is the discussion about Sony’s newly-announced PS5 Pro, as the folks at Digital Foundry are breaking down what Mark Cerny & Co. did and did not reveal about the $699.99 disc drive-less console.

You can stop sharing leaked images of the PS5 Pro; real ones have arrived.

Here it is in Sony’s gallery-full of images, including some on the optional vertical stand — and one that shows how it attaches to the also-optional, not-included Blu-ray disc drive.

Destiny 2 is charting new frontiers.

Bungie has shared a new content roadmap for Destiny 2. Going forward, expansions will be much smaller and released every six months. The D2 team also plans on streamlining the game’s UI and reward offerings in order to make the notoriously newbie unfriendly game a bit more approachable.

Hopefully the new strategy can right the Destiny 2 ship after layoffs, underwhelming content, and project cancellations rocked the studio.
