PlayStation

For more than 25 years, Sony’s PlayStation has been synonymous with gaming. It’s given players experiences like God of War, The Last of Us, and Final Fantasy VII alongside technological innovations from CD-ROMs all the way up to 4K, VR, and cloud gaming. There have even been attempts at portable gaming with the PSP and Vita. Across multiple generations the company has been a pioneer, starting with the original PlayStation and continuing with the PS5.

The Last of Us’ Neil Druckmann reckons “there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”

It’s far from confirmation of a Last of Us Part 3, but co-creator Druckmann has confirmed he’s got a concept in mind for a third entry in the series, should Naughty Dog ever choose to make it:

“I’ve been just thinking about it, ‘is there a concept there?’ And for, now, years I haven’t been able to find that concept. But recently, that’s changed, and I don’t have a story, but I do have that concept that to me is as exciting as [Part 1], as exciting as [Part 2], is its own thing, and yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”

You can check out Druckmann’s comments in Naughty Dog’s recently released Last of Us Part 2 documentary (starting at around the 1:57 mark).

It looks like Hi-Fi Rush is coming to PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

After rumors of Xbox console exclusive Hi-Fi Rush coming to PS5 and Nintendo Switch, data miners might have just found a smoking gun. T-shirt files included in the game’s latest update include a “I’m here baby!” in PlayStation blue, a “Rock out! Anywhere” in Nintendo Switch red, and “Shadow dropped” in Xbox green. The rock out anywhere slogan must reference the Switch’s portability, the “I’m here baby!” the sheer surprise of an Xbox game on PS5, and the shadow drop for the original surprise Xbox launch. There’s no smoke without fire.

I can’t stop watching the Death Stranding 2 trailer.

There were a lot of games featured in last night’s PlayStation livestream, but I can’t get Hideo Kojima’s latest out of my mind. There’s just so much going on in the 9-minute-long clip: glistening demon cats, talking puppets, creepy hand masks, electric guitar swordfights, and of course plenty of weird little babies. Also, George Miller is there. It’s going to be a long wait until 2025.

PHYSINT is the working title of Hideo Kojima’s new not-a-Metal-Gear game.

In case you missed the tease at the end of Sony’s State of Play, Kojima revealed he’s got a “next-generation action espionage” game in development — and then the entire livestream ended by zooming out to show the “PHYSINT” logo you see below. We checked, and it’s not trademarked, despite the TM sign you see. Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait long to find out what it means.

And one more thing (from Kojima).

As if Death Stranding 2 and OD weren’t enough, Kojima confirmed he’s working on a new IP with Sony, described as a “next-generation action espionage” game. So, you know, Metal Gear Solid. Production won’t begin until after DS2 launches in 2025. “I am confident that this title will be the culmination of my work,” Kojima says.

The video game remakes just keep coming.

2024 has already been packed with them, thanks to The Last of Us Part II, Another Code, and Persona 3, among others. Now, we can add the 2015 horror game Until Dawn to that list. The new version has been rebuilt for both PC and PS5 and is due to launch this year.

A deeper look at Team Ninja’s latest.

We already knew that Rise of the Ronin was coming out on the PS5 on March 22nd, but here’s another look at the action RPG, with a heavy focus on the actual gameplay at its core.

Metro awakens in VR.

Metro Exodus, the post-apocalyptic first-person shooter from Deep Silver, is getting a VR spinoff that looks very creepy. It’s called Metro Awakening, and it’s coming to the PSVR 2 later this year.

Here comes Judas.

It’s been well over a year since Ken Levine’s Ghost Story studio revealed its first project, a narrative shooter called Judas, so it’s about time we got a new trailer that gave a better sense of what the sci-fi story is all about. My main takeaway? It looks weird as hell. (Mostly in a good way.) Judas still doesn’t have a release date, and it’s coming to Xbox and PC as well as the PS5.

According to Ghost Story, the game takes place:

aboard the Mayflower, a spacefaring city whose citizens are trained to tear each other apart for even the most minor infractions, and where machines control every aspect of business, art, and government. You, as Judas, are the driver of every event in a mysterious story with a new cast of characters to get to know — and to change — in a world where every decision you make affects how the story unfolds.

Sonic and Shadow sitting in a tree.

Sonic Generations was released 14 years ago this November (god I’m old) and in celebration of this slightly odd anniversary, Sega is remaking the game. But this time, instead of Sonic being front and center, the game will feature his longtime rival (or lover... or both depending on the kinds of fanfiction you read) Shadow the Hedgehog.

Sonic x Shadow Generations (which has to be the title of a fanfiction somewhere) will feature an all-new story mode starring Shadow with new levels and bosses. Sonic x Shadow Generations launches in fall 2024.

Dave dives onto PlayStation.

Cult hit Dave the Diver is making its way to PlayStation in April. Even more surprising? The game is getting a free Godzilla-themed update in May.

Welcome (back) to hell.

Things kicked off with a brief new trailer for Sony’s sci-fi bug shooter Helldivers 2. It’s been almost a decade since the original game, but the wait for the sequel won’t be too long now: it launches on the PS5 and PC on February 8th.

While we wait for State of Play to start,

it’s a good time to re-watch the trippy-ass reveal trailer for Death Stranding 2, as we’ll likely be seeing more of the sequel this afternoon. If you want to watch along with the PlayStation event live, the details are right here.

Destiny 2’s game director is leaving Bungie next month.

Joe Blackburn, Destiny 2’s current game director, has just announced he is leaving Bungie next month. Tyson Green, who previously worked on Halo PvP, is taking over as game director. “Tyson has been a critical part of Bungie’s legacy since Myth II,” says Blackburn in a post on X. Blackburn’s departure comes months after Bungie was forced to delay its Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion to June, amid around 100 layoffs at the PlayStation studio.

My emotions are reaching their Limit Break.

We’re exactly a month out from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which means fans only have one question on their minds: what is going to happen to Aerith? This quote from producer Yoshinori Kitase doesn’t clear things up much, but it does make me even more curious about how they’re approaching this iconic moment:

Aerith’s fate is one of the most important themes in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s story. I really want people to play the game and feel it directly, so I will not say too much here, but when comparing this scene to how it was presented in the original, I am confident that the audience will feel a great breadth of emotion from the extra level of detail in how the characters are portrayed.

You can be The Last of Us’ composer. Really.

By playing as the actual composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, in The Last of Us Part II Remastered’s guitar freeplay mode. The banjo is an option, too.

The game comes out on January 19th.

Grounded II.

Naughty Dog is releasing a documentary for The Last of Us Part II, but hasn’t shared a specific release date. You’ll be able to watch the full thing (officially titled Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II) on YouTube and in The Last of Us Part II Remastered via a post-launch update.

While you wait, you can watch the documentary for the first game right now.

Is Sony about to revamp the PS5’s DualSense controller?

A product listings for a mysterious “V2” DualSense has cropped up on Best Buy’s Canadian store. Although it’s priced the same, the listing mentions an included charging station, and that the controller offers “exceptional 12-hour battery life,” which, if true, would represent a moderate step up from the 7-8 hours we’ve been getting from the existing model.

Update January 11th, 10:24AM ET: We found a similar listing on EE’s online store, but it’s now been edited to remove the “V2” mention. Here’s a screenshot of how it looked before.

Immortality is coming to PS5.

Sam Barlow’s very good (and sometimes weird) FMV game will be available on PS5 on January 23rd. If you don’t want to wait to try it out, you can play it now on PC, Xbox, and mobile via Netflix.

It’s kind of weird that Nintendo is making a Legend of Zelda movie with Sony, right?

While kicking off Sony’s CES 2024 press conference, CEO Kenichiro Yoshida mentioned some of the Sony Pictures highlights on the way, including a particularly interesting partnership with Nintendo. All we got was that “This live action film will deliver an amazing tale of adventure and discovery,” whenever it’s eventually released.

Sony’s CES presentation is due at 8PM ET.

Sony may again not be showing any TVs at CES this year, but it’s still going to take the stage to talk about “technologies and initiatives that support creators.” Last year, the company showed off an electric car called the Afeela, which had a built-in PS5 and a screen on the front.

The company has been tight-lipped about what it might show tonight. My money’s on a PS5 with a built-in car.

Brooklyn Nets star Mikal Bridges shows off his traveling PS5 setup.

Presumably, he had this Poga PS5 carrying case / portable monitor with him last night in Detroit as his team handed the Pistons their record-breaking 27th straight loss.

Some may say, “Just get a Steam Deck” (Danny Brown concurs), but that wouldn’t be the best option for Madden, and despite a price starting above $1,000, at least this means he doesn’t have to worry about hotel HDMI shenanigans. Still, I don’t think anything tops the San Antonio Spurs laptop LAN setup for Starcraft during the 1999 NBA Finals.

It does one thing well, and yet there are other multi-use devices that are arguably better, but dammit sometimes I’m lazy.

The cost of AAA development is too damn high.

A report from Kotaku has examined some of the documents released as a part of a malicious ransomware attack on Spider-Man 2 developer Insomniac Games. The documents reveal that Insomniac spent $300 million on the game’s development, roughly $30 million over budget, and that the game needs to sell 7 million copies at full price to break even.

Among the leaked presentations, one slide asks if gamers even noticed the 3x budget increase between Spider-Man 1 and 2.
