How the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra can keep people from seeing what’s on your screen

Imagine you’re on a plane typing an urgent question to your doctor, or checking your bank account balance. The person sitting next to you probably isn’t trying to snoop, but maybe they’re bored, their eyes are unintentionally wandering, and your bright, colorful phone screen draws their gaze — you might know this because you’ve snuck a look at someone else’s screen before.

“Research shows that 56 percent of our users perceive screen disability as a form of privacy invasion, especially when they are logging into banking accounts or chatting with others,” said Samsung’s Executive VP and Head of Smartphone R&D team, Moon Sung-Hoon at a recent launch event.

Consumers want a solution to address this, but for years the only real fix to this problem was an aftermarket privacy film — a thick, plasticky layer that made everything look a little dull, dampened display colors, and stopped functioning the moment you rotated your phone horizontally.

How does the S26 solve this privacy issue?

The new Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra finally solves this problem at a hardware level. Its Privacy Display feature is the first of its kind to be built directly into a smartphone: no sticky film, no add-ons, and no compromise on what you can see.

Why did phone privacy become such a big problem?

This problem is a relatively recent one. Early mobile phones had small, dim displays — basic LCD screens that nobody was doing anything sensitive on. As smartphones evolved, screens got bigger and resolution got a lot better — making it easier to snoop. As technology matured through the early 2010s, viewing angle quality became something manufacturers actively competed on. Then we entered the “phablet” era, which normalised 6-inch-plus displays.

At the same time, phones transformed from a communication device to a banking terminal, health records portal, password manager, and a place for work emails. The sensitivity of the information on screen increased dramatically while the physical contexts — trains, cafés, open office spaces, airport lounges, middle seats — stayed the same. Instead of continuing to tilt to the side or shield their screen with their hand to maintain privacy, Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra users can operate their phones with confidence no matter where they are or what they’re doing.

What is “Privacy Display?”

The new internal “screen protector” on the S26 Ultra lives in an innovative feature called Privacy Display that restricts the angle at which light leaves the phone’s screen. When it’s active, your display looks perfectly normal from directly in front — same brightness, same colors, same coveted Galaxy AMOLED quality. But anyone looking from the side, above, or below sees a darkened, nearly unreadable screen.

Unlike software dimming tricks (which reduce visibility for everyone, including you), or polarised films (which are fixed, fragile, and landscape-incompatible), this is a structural change at the hardware level. Privacy Display is the default setting on the S26 Ultra until users adjust or disable it.

Can you customise when Privacy Display turns on?

Maybe you’ve had the experience of showing someone something on your phone only to have a private message pop up on the screen. One of the best parts about this feature is that you can easily personalise it: Privacy Display can block only that message notification area so it doesn’t disrupt the video or email you’re showing someone. You can flip the feature on or off instantly from the Quick Panel.

Privacy Display offers several activation modes that allow you to customise the exact level of privacy you’re looking for:

  • Always on
  • PIN/password entry only
  • Specific apps only
  • Notification pop-ups only

How does Privacy Display actually work? The physics explained.

Here’s how the technology works: The S26 Ultra’s display contains two distinct types of pixels, narrow and wide OLED sub-pixels. Standard OLED pixels emit light in a broad arc, which is exactly why OLED screens have historically offered such wide viewing angles. That wide-angle emission is a selling point, but it’s also what makes peeking over someone’s shoulder so easy.

When Privacy Display is toggled on, the display disables or dims the wide angle pixels, and the narrow pixels, which are engineered to restrict light emission to a direct line of sight, carry the image instead. The visual result for the person beside you is close to a switched-off screen.

The underlying architecture is called Flex Magic Pixel (FMP) — a technology Samsung first unveiled in 2024 and has since filed some 150 patents around. The newly released S26 Ultra is the first smartphone to ship it.

There’s also a Maximum Privacy mode for when you need increased privacy. Rather than turning the wide pixels off, it switches them back on at a specific brightness tuned to create noise, making content even harder to parse. The screen appears washed out and scrambled to anyone viewing from the side — useful in high-stakes situations like reviewing confidential documents or entering passwords in a crowded space.

How long did it take Samsung to build Privacy Display?

The goal to create a smartphone with Privacy Display is the result of more than five years of research and development, engineering, testing, and refining to create the technology and get it into the S26 Ultra.

To bring it to life, the team studied not just the optics, but human behavior — what people consider private, how they hold their phones, which apps they reach for on the bus. The result is a feature with real configurability and options for customisation.

A feature that actually solves something

There’s no lock screen arrangement, no notification setting, no software tweak that stops a stranger from reading your screen. What makes Privacy Display notable is that it’s a rare case of hardware solving a problem that software was failing to adequately address. Privacy screen films tried to solve for this, but it came at the price of a lesser user experience.

The S26 Ultra bakes the solution in at the panel level, and is available exclusively on the Ultra model (the standard S26 and S26+ don’t have it). For anyone who’s ever tilted their phone away from a stranger on the subway, or angled their screen down in a coffee shop, it’s the kind of solution that’s been a long time coming. After years of trying to keep what’s on your phone private, you can now go about your business in peace.
