Spotify’s got some news coming on March 8th.

The company has announced its next “Stream On” event, where it plans to share updates on “creator tools, features, and programming.” The last event, in 2021, was used to lay out Spotify’s business vision in podcasting, music, and other arenas.

As my colleague Chris Welch reminded me, “This is where they announced HiFi!” Here’s hoping it actually arrives this time.

Spotify’s CEO is glad to have another ally in the fight against Apple.

In a lengthy tweet thread this morning, Daniel Ek criticized Apple’s App Store policies as a “threat to the future of the internet” — and he welcome Elon Musk to the fight.

Spotify has been critical of Apple’s policies for years, but it was only this week that the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX realized he might run into some problems with Apple now that he owns Twitter.

Keep waiting, Tidal subscribers.

A year and a half after Jack Dorsey’s non-Twitter venture bought a significant stake in Tidal, I still don’t understand why it makes sense to combine a financial services company with a music service.

But, while musing about the potential of another mobile OS, Dorsey tells The Verge editor and reviewer Chris Welch, that unspecified changes are “coming soon.”

How soon? Who knows, but probably before Spotify adds lossless HiFi streaming.

Spotify’s expanding its audiobooks to more countries.

After coming to the US in September, Spotify’s audiobook service has finally arrived in other English-speaking countries, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

There are over 300,000 audiobook titles available — but you can’t purchase them from Spotify’s iOS app due to Apple’s App Store restrictions.

Taylor Swift’s new album already set a Spotify streaming record.

“Midnights” now holds the crown for the most streams in a single day. I guess that’s why Spotify crashed for some people overnight.

Spotify’s Car Thing’s real home is on your desk.

The Spotify Car Thing is a pretty terrible in-car gadget; it’s completely redundant with (and reliant on) your phone and isn’t capable of doing anything other than play music or podcasts from Spotify. No maps, no messages, no calls.

But over on YouTube, the Work from Hype channel argues those qualities make it perfect for a dedicated music controller on your desk, where it can be mounted in an easy way and provide quick access to whatever tunes you’re listening to while working.

I tend to agree, and for the $30 price Spotify is charging for this thing now that it’s officially discontinued, it’s a sweet desk accessory. I just bought one.
