Transportation

Everyone needs to get around. How we do it will change more over the next decade than it has in the last century. Legacy automakers, like Ford and GM, are scrambling to become technology-savvy companies, and the tech industry is trying to cash in on the change. New players, like Rivian and Tesla, are disrupting the industry and sometimes stumbling. We look at how self-driving hardware and software make the automobile better or, in some cases, deeply flawed. We cut through the hype and empty promises to tell you what’s really happening and what we think is coming. Verge Transportation cares about all moving machines and the place they have in the future.

SpaceX proposes a new plan for NASA’s Artemis III moon landing.

Former Real World cast member and current Transportation Secretary / acting NASA administrator Sean Duffy recently said SpaceX was “behind” on its contract for Artemis III and proposed reopening it. (Elon Musk responded with a predictable slew of insults.)

Now SpaceX has a response, but its blog post is missing one thing: the details of this “simplified” approach.

In response to the latest calls, we’ve shared and are formally assessing a simplified mission architecture and concept of operations that we believe will result in a faster return to the Moon while simultaneously improving crew safety.

Congratulations to the Tesla Cybertruck on its 10th recall.

This one seems pretty minor, all things considered. It’s for a possible issue with the installation of an off-road light bar accessory that could detach while driving. But it’s notable given that the truck has already racked up a whopping 10 recalls in just two years on the road. Most have been related to poor build quality, which could also be a factor in the truck’s dismal sales record.

That’s a Corolla?

Toyota unveiled a concept version of its frumpy, best-selling sedan at the Tokyo auto show this week. The concept was, dare I say, sharp as hell? Practically makes you want to slowly lower your sunglasses and let out an appreciative whistle.

Toyota has been extremely reticent about EVs — environmentalists would even call them obstructionist — but an electric Corolla would do numbers. Toyota says the new platform could support gas, hybrid, or electric. Let’s see if they deliver on that promise.

Doesn’t look like any Corolla I’ve ever seen.

GM lays off 1,750 workers from its battery factories.

The automaker is citing an expected slowdown in electric vehicle sales, brought on by the expiration of the $7,500 EV tax credit. GM is also temporarily 850 workers from its Ultium Cells battery cell plant in Ohio, and 750 employees at the Ultium Cells’ Tennessee plant.

Ctrl Alt Deleaf.

That’s the name the British public selected for a new leaf-kicking train rolling out next week. It will blast high-pressure water to remove leaves from tracks, a much bigger problem than it sounds like.

‘Ctrl Alt Deleaf’ beat ‘Leaf-Fall Weapon’ in the public vote, a little bit of justice after the ’Boaty McBoatface’ saga.

Widgets on wheels.

Android Authority has done its usual digging around and discovered code for home screen widgets in Android Auto. They’re clearly still a work-in-progress, but should eventually let you run one widget at a time on the left third of the screen.

A long-lost EV1 just sold at auction for a crazy amount.

GM destroyed most of the original EV1s, as documented by the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? But a few remain, mostly in museum or university collections. The Autopian recently discovered one of the original OG electric vehicles in auction in Atlanta, and before you know, CarTube creators descended, bidding up the price to over $100,000. This for a non-running relic of an EV! We’ll keep our eye out for the inevitable YouTube video.

The Elon of it all, empirically.

Elon Musk’s political activities — buying Twitter, renaming it X, and letting election deniers and white supremacists back on; donating nearly $300 million to elect Donald Trump; heading DOGE — have dramatically harmed Tesla’s financial fortunes, according to a new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research by Yale University economists. Musk’s polarizing behavior likely cost the company up to 1.26 million vehicle sales in the US alone, the group estimates. Meanwhile, EV sales from other automakers popped 17-22 percent, as Musk-disgusted shoppers spent their cash elsewhere.

Japan’s most popular EV may get a slide-out solar roof that doubles as sunshade.

The $15,000 Nissan Sakura kei car is breaking records in Japan — and I badly want this new prototype version with an always-active solar roof that nearly doubles in size when you park. At 500W, Nissan estimates it can add 1,864 miles of range per year. Here’s the YouTube video.

No more riding the lightning.

Ford halted production of the F-150 Lightning at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. For now the automaker is prioritizing its gas and hybrid F-series trucks because they’re more profitable and use less aluminum. Ford is also still recovering from a September 16th fire at aluminum supplier Novelis’ plant in Oswego, New York.

Stop trying to make “cobot” happen.

GM — on the latest Decoder — used the word “cobot” in a transparent bid to assuage workers concerned that the robots operating alongside them will soon replace them. As we learned this week from Amazon’s proposed usage of the friendlier term: human replacement is definitely the plan.

Rivian lays off 4 percent of its workforce.

More than 600 people are scheduled to lose their jobs, the Wall Street Journal report. The move comes a few weeks after the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, which is widely expected to lead to a slowdown in EV sales. And it comes a day after Rivian’s spinoff Also revealed its first slate of new micromobility products. Rivian is also bracing itself for the lose of revenue from the sale of regulatory credits to other automakers, which was eliminated by Trump’s budget bill.

Elon Musk predicts Tesla’s Optimus ‘will make a great surgeon.’

This is the same robot that couldn’t handle popcorn distribution at Tesla’s diner, and was revealed to be remote controlled at the company’s Cybercab event. In a Q3 earnings call, Musk said he would “of course” ensure that “Optimus is safe” before allowing it to perform surgery on anyone. Volunteers?

Rivian’s new e-bike could tip the scales.

Weight can be a major factor in whether an e-bike makes sense for a certain customer, especially those that live in cities. With that in mind, here’s how Rivian’s new Also TM-B bike stacks up, as per a spokesperson:

  • Carry weight (frame only, no battery or top frame): 30.25 kg/66.7 lb
  • Bench seat configuration with large battery: 39.8 kg/87.7 lb
  • Solo configuration, small frame with standard battery: 37.3 kg/82.3 lb
  • Solo configuration, large frame with large battery: 38.6 kg/85 lb
  • Utility configuration, large frame with large battery: 41 kg/90.4 lb
Inside Rivian’s $4,500 electric bike gamble

The Also TM-B is a shapeshifting, pedal-by-wire, USB-C chargeable electric bike set to launch soon. But will the $4,500 price tag limit its appeal?

Tesla is recalling nearly 13k vehicles over a battery defect that could cause sudden power loss.

A potential battery pack contactor defect could cause the EVs to suddenly lose power, as reported by Reuters. Tesla acknowledged in a NHTSA filing that the issue impacts 12,963 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y vehicles manufactured between March 8th and August 15th, 2025.

Affected vehicles are equipped with a battery pack contactor manufactured with InTiCa solenoid which may suddenly open due to poor coil termination connection, potentially causing a sudden loss of propulsion.

“Women don’t like the vehicle.”

At Wired, Zoë Schiffer (a Verge alum) talked to Cybertruck owners about life with Elon Musk’s controversial car. Somehow, the quotes in this story are even more ridiculous than the photos.
