Twitter recently won a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) dispute over the twiter.com domain, requiring Geigo Inc. to give up ownership. This case was unusual because the common misspelling was actually registered long before Twitter even existed. However, the owners made the WIPO panel’s decision easy by redirecting to a look-alike scam site promising free iPhones and iPads. At one point the imposter was getting over 100,000 unique visitors per month, according to Fusible. Although Twitter took control of twiter.biz earlier this year, there are still copycats, like twtter.com which blatantly uses the little bird logo to gain the trust of butterfingered visitors — so until the rest of the fakes get cleaned up, type carefully.
