A Star Mount for your Starlink Mini.

The company that specializes in mobile 12V conversions of SpaceX’s internet-from-space kits has just released its first mount for Starlink’s smallest dish yet. Despite its size, Mini even integrates the Wi-Fi router (usually a separate box) into the laptop-sized package.

$249 gets you a versatile mount with shock absorption for your RV, boat, or overlanding rig.

The mount protects the Starlink Mini dish and router.
It includes magnets and suction cups, with a new quick release add-on “available soon.” It also has through holes so it can be bolted into place.

A quick review of the Sitpack Campster 2.

Not every chair is a gadget, but this one sure is. Its lightweight, one-piece, collapsible design packs down small but still feels rock solid when sitting on uneven ground. The Campster 2 costs $110 before adding accessories like an insulated beer holster and a cozy quilted cover.

Click through the gallery for details and more impressions.

The Sitpack Campster 2 chair on grass near a table that’s next to a pair of shoes and a dog that wants you to throw his ball.
It takes about 20 seconds to set up but does require a few dry runs to loosen everything up and build some muscle memory. I could probably get that time down to 10 seconds if a bear suddenly appeared and ordered me to sit.
It’s pretty wide at 19 inches (48cm) across. It weighs 3.23 pounds (1.5kg), which is very light but heavy compared to something like a Helinox Chair Zero, which is half the weight but costs $50 more.
It is ventilated to keep cool in the summer with two integrated side pockets.
Relaxed sitting position.
Packed down into its carrying bag — shoes of regular-sized humans for scale. Good for car camping or a day hike but too big / heavy for ultralight backpacking or bikepacking.
Yes, there’s an optional insulated beer holster.
From the front: Fitted with a $9.95 optional insulated bottle / can holder, a $25 optional ground sheet (to prevent sinking in sand), and a $49 optional quilted cover to help fend off a cold wind.
From the back.
The mechanical base of the single-piece chair.
Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) feet for use on less durable surfaces. You will 100 percent lose these in time.
I’m 180 pounds (82kg), and the only flex I felt assisted with comfort without the base ever feeling unstable. It’s rated for 300 pounds (120kg) in case my dog wants to jump on my lap — which he did without issue.
Orange means camping in 2024.
Sitpack Campster 2 is finally on general sale and shipping to all. Production woes slowed down deliveries to the original Kickstarter backers based on feedback in comments — but that’s crowdfunding for ya.

It’s tall for a camp chair, which makes it suitable for taller tables. The seat is 12 inches (30cm) off the ground, with the back measuring 28 inches (71cm) at its highest point.

EcoFlow brings 800W of charging power to vanlife.

The $599 Alternator Charger sits between the starter battery on your RV, van, or truck and the giant EcoFlow battery you use to power your work and play when off the grid. It charges at a rate of 1kWh for every 1.3 hours of driving and can also be used to maintain and jump start the starter battery if needed.

A nearly waterproof big ass battery.

If you own a solar generator then chances are you’ve been caught out when the sun unexpectedly yields to rain. Bluetti’s new scalable AC240 features an IP65 rating, making it highly resistant to dust and water jets. It also supports up to 1200W of solar input to charge its 1536Wh LFP battery (expandable to 20,272Wh), and delivers 2400W of AC output with an option to double up units for 4800W.

Starlink just got cheaper, again.

In some countries including the Netherlands (where I live), the price has dropped to €50/mth (from €65/mth) for residential customers while my roam plan that lets me take my dishy anywhere in Europe has dropped to €59/mth (from €100/mth), down from €124/mth when I started service back in 2022. One-time hardware costs have now been lowered from €450 to €225, as well, down from the €720 I paid for gen 1.

LG’s camping trailer is nicer than most homes.

I love bending nature to my will, but the Bon Voyage concept trailer is... something. LG’s experimental Labs group has fitted this beast with a bed and bathroom as usual, but also a wine bar, outdoor beer fridge, karaoke machine, an external TV revealed behind a fold-down table, a second pull-out table with integrated induction cooktop, that stupid Duobo coffee creature, and one of those clothing sanitizers LG has been bringing to CES for years but I’ll never understand.

Anker’s camp battery hides a selfie-stick with light.

Power stations commonly feature a small integrated light, but the Solix C800 Plus attaches a rechargeable camping light to a long retractable pole (that doubles as a selfie stick) to illuminate a larger area of 10 square meters for up to eight hours. It’s loaded with ports and features 768Wh of LFP storage, up to 1200W of AC output, and 300W of solar input. Available in March but pricing is still TBD.

The 3-mode (low, medium and full brightness) camp light charges while stored under the lid alongside the 100cm retractable stick. That silver ball screws off to reveal a standard tripod mount for your camera.
The Anker Solix C800 Plus weights 20 pounds and can charge from 0 to 100 in less than an hour when pulling 1100W from a wall socket.
All the specs.
The European model has three 230V AC outlets instead of five 110V jacks found on the US model.

Starlink space internet is no longer losing money.

This time last year Musk said that Starlink was losing about $20 million a month. Now he says it’s breakeven, which is good news for a service that keeps people connected in remote locations, in times of disaster and war, or while tooling around in a van or boat. Unimpeded growth could be bad for astronomers trying to see past those roughly 5,000 satellites currently operating in low-Earth orbit, with plans for up to 37,000 more.

Deodorant sales surge as workers return to office.

We already kinda knew this, didn’t we fellow slobs, but good to hear Unilever confirm it:

Many people didn’t use deodorant as much when they were in lockdown and working from home and some recovery in that is coming through.

The maker of Axe, Dove, and Rexona says deodorant sales have surged 15 percent now that companies have mostly settled on a hybrid approach for remote-capable employees.

This Winnebago x EcoFlow campervan can last for days off grid.

The new Solis Pocket 36B comes standard with an EcoFlow PowerKit I reviewed last year. It starts with a 5kWh battery that can be expandable to 15kWh, which is a ton of LFP storage capacity for a van. It’s available to buy in the US and Canada from August.

Or maybe wait for Winnebago’s production version of the all-electric eRV2. Decisions, decisions.

“Enables up to three days of boondocking” from a single 5kWh configuration “in favorable weather conditions.”
Shame they couldn’t integrate all the van’s functions into EcoFlow’s big console display.
A closer look at EcoFlow’s console display.
The Power Kit components are installed under the dinette seat. But there’s only room for one 5kWh battery here.
EcoFlow’s ecosystem of solar generators can further extend off-grid usage.
Power the van (and charge its batteries) from a generator or shore power when back to civilization.
The garage is also the shower.
Removable toilet and on-board gas.
Hob is still gas-powered, not electric.
5kWh battery can run the air conditioner (A/C) for up to five hours.

VW’s ID Buzz gets the Ventje camper treatment.

The transformable Ventje interior I reviewed last summer is now available in Europe on Volkswagen’s all-electric ID Buzz that I reviewed a few months ago. The eVentje sleeps four and prices start at €95,000 for the Microbuzz plus interior. Delivery takes about nine months, which is a lot sooner than VW will release an official ID California campervan.

The interior furniture moves outside.
The kitchen can be accessed from outside and inside the van.
The interior can be moved around as your needs change throughout the day.
The lower bed sleeps two while a popup above sleeps another two.
Yet another configuration option for the modular interior.
The eVentje drew a crowd when unveiled last month.
It’s based on the short wheel base version of the VW ID Buzz, already released in Europe.

Starlink and Telstra to connect remote Australians.

The top telecom provider will be using Elon Musk’s network of over 3,500 low-Earth SpaceX satellites to augment coverage by the end of 2023. The “world’s first offering” bundles voice and fixed broadband service, installation, and tech support.

A Telstra exec says the company is looking for other partners, too, due to Musk’s unpredictability.

You’re more than just a conference room.

Google Workspace is adding a new Meet feature that lets workers in conference rooms check in and participate as individuals during meetings. The feature can bridge the gap between office and work from home business environments.

To use the feature, you’ll need to activate “companion mode” on your personal device and then check in to your meeting — kind of like playing a Jackbox party game.
