After a week or so of on-again off-again reports that Microsoft has ceased production on Zune hardware and will instead focus on software, a new report (and a company rep) confirm that the Zune HD is, indeed, dead.
Microsoft confirms Zune HD is dead


zune playing tool We reached out to a Microsoft representative for confirmation, and were told that this latest news is indeed correct. In their words: “We are no longer producing Zune devices. Going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy.”
It seems that over the last few days, even Microsoft wasn’t sure if Zune hardware would soldier on. When the product pages were first pulled, Microsoft quickly recanted, claiming they were removed in error. Later, it pulled the pages and added a statement on future Zune developments, but then that was also yanked (as you can see in the Stream below). Now, however, that statement on Zune hardware has returned, and it looks like this time it’s going to stick. We’ve captured that notice in part just below.
