4K TVs are by no means price competitive with today’s most popular 1080p sets, but things are at least moving in the right direction. Sharp has announced that its 70-inch Aquos Ultra HD LED TV will go on sale at US retailers in mid-August at an MSRP of $7,999.99. Compare that to the 2.6 million yen ($31,000) ICC Purios announced at CES — with a smaller 60-inch display, even — and it’s clear we’re seeing a favorable trend for consumers. (We’ve reached out to Sharp regarding the current status of that previously announced model.)

Sharp is (again) claiming that its Aquos Ultra HD LED TV is the world’s first to gain THX 4K certification, a stamp of approval that promises viewers industry-leading picture quality. THX also factors in upconversion performance, an important feature considering the dearth of proper 4K content that’s available to these TVs right now. Sony offers a slightly smaller 65-inch 4K LED TV at $6,999, with the company’s 55-inch model representing today’s “bargain” 4K set at $4,999. Not everyone’s racing to the bottom just yet; Samsung’s gorgeous “easel” 4K TV remains an unattainable luxury buy for most at its $39,999 asking price.
