J.J. Abrams’ production company is making a mini-series from The Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling’s final script, Deadline reports. Bad Robot Productions — known for shows like Fringe and Revolution — has reportedly acquired the rights to The Stops Along the Way, a little-known Serling screenplay that was never produced. An interview given four months before his death in 1975 contains a rare mention of the project, referred to as The Stop Along the Way instead.

“I guess Requiem for a Heavyweight as old as it is was as honest a piece as I’ve ever done,” he said, when asked about his favorite scripts. “Tearing Down Tim Reilly’s Bar (from Night Gallery) was one of my favorites. And then one that I just wrote called The Stop Along the Way, which is, I think, a lovely script.”
Deadline has no further details about the screenplay’s premise or its timeline for production. Serling had a prolific career — among other works for radio, television, print, and film, he co-wrote the screenplay for Planet of the Apes and created multiple classic anthology series, and he’s had unpublished work produced posthumously. But the script’s obscurity raises another possibility, no matter how remote: there’s always the chance that Bad Robot is attempting some kind of metafiction.
