Tesla has quashed reports that it will announce a second car alongside the hotly anticipated Model 3 in March, after Electrek's Seth Weintraub reported yesterday that the electric car maker would show off "at least two different versions" of the Model 3 at the unveiling event, according to a "second-hand source." Electrek also ran a screenshot from a recent Tesla presentation in Hong Kong that shows two cars under wraps, but a Tesla spokesperson called the report "wrong."

While the Model 3 will be a traditional sedan, the second car was apparently set to be a crossover. That had lined up nicely with information that came to light in 2015. Tesla CTO JB Straubel teased a crossover version of the Model 3 as far back as June, and in October Elon Musk tweeted that the Model 3’s companion would be known as the Model Y. (He apparently regretted the decision, because he quickly deleted the tweet.)

What we didn’t know was that this mystery Tesla model would be ready in time for the Model 3 event, which Musk has been planning for a long time now.
Little is known about the Model 3, and even less is known about the Model Y. It’s likely that the Model Y would be built on the same platform as the Model 3, much like how Tesla’s Model X is essentially the Model S sedan with an SUV-style frame on top. What we do know about the Model 3 is that it will cost about $35,000, and should have a range of at least 200 miles.
Update January 29th, 1:30 AM ET: Tesla has responded to Electrek’s report, calling it “wrong.”
