Nest comes home to roost

Google is officially bringing Nest into the fold. The smart home device maker, which has been both a separate company under Alphabet and part of Google, is now getting rebranded as Google Nest, the company announced during its Google I/O 2019 keynote.

Nest will be the brand going forward for Google’s home products — last year’s Home Hub is getting renamed to be called the Google Nest Hub, alongside a newly announced, larger Nest Hub Max product that Google just unveiled onstage.

Google also showed off some of its other smart home products that will live under the repurposed Nest branding, including the Google Home and Google Home Mini, Google Wifi, Chromecast, and of course, Nest’s existing smart home products (although it’s unclear if those other Google products will be getting Nest names also).

Making homes “helpful homes” is the big push from Google here, with the company committing to core tenets like ease of use, personal data, interconnectivity, and privacy for its newly renamed efforts, but details on what that will mean in a more concrete sense weren’t discussed onstage.
