Ring’s mysterious new ‘Doorbox’ leaks

Is it an intercom or a lockable box to store keys?

Amazon-owned smart home company Ring appears to have a new product on the way called the “Ring Doorbox,” according to an image discovered by Dave Zatz over at Zatz Not Funny. However, it’s not immediately obvious what exactly the Doorbox is. It doesn’t appear to have a camera, so it’s probably not another video doorbell, and there are no obvious motion sensors for a security system. It’s all a bit of a mystery.

Although the term “doorbox” is sometimes used for intercom systems, Zatz speculates that Ring’s new device is actually for storing keys since it can apparently be locked and unlocked remotely. That could make it a good alternative to a smart lock for anyone who wants to give someone access to their home using a smartphone, but it doesn’t want the hassle of replacing the traditional lock in their front door. It could be useful for Airbnb hosts or anyone who wants to use Amazon Key without having to install a smart lock.

It’s unclear when Ring might announce the Doorbox or how much it intends to charge for it. In a week’s time, the company is due to release its latest video doorbells, the Ring Video Doorbell 3 and Video Doorbell 3 Plus, which come with upgraded Wi-Fi connectivity and adjustable motion zones. The Plus model also features a new “Pre-roll” feature that allows owners to view footage captured before the doorbell sends a motion alert.
