Meta’s AI translation project is tackling unwritten languages.
In February, Facebook’s parent company Meta announced it was working on an AI-powered “universal translator,” and yesterday shared an interesting first: it can now translate Hokkien, a “primarily oral” language from China.
It’s neat work, and shows how adaptable the underlying tech is. Meta says universal translation could be a killer app for the metaverse — though I’d prefer having just the translator myself.
