Airbnb must pay over $10 million for putting US prices on Australian stays.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says Airbnb has “acknowledged” that it displayed US dollar amounts for some Australian customers from January 2018 to August 2021. That led some users to pay more than what they had expected:

The Airbnb platform was meant to operate so that consumers accessing the platform in Australia who had not manually selected otherwise would be shown prices in Australian dollars. However, the platform did not operate in this way for some Australian consumers and some consumers were shown prices and charged in US dollars.

Airbnb started clearly displaying “USD” labels in 2021 and will compensate customers who were overcharged.
