The new White House Cyber Trust label for smart devices could be a big deal.

The FCC shared a proposed Energy Star-like cybersecurity label and Cyber Trust logo for certified devices. It would show how long you can expect Internet of Things (IoT) devices to get updates, what kind of data is collected and if it’s shared, and much more.

We’ll see how much of it sticks, but what the FCC showed today was encouraging.

Two product boxes, each featuring a label on the front with the Cyber Trust shield, QR code, and relevant data.
Five variants of the Cyber Trust Mark, from top left to bottom right: blue to aqua, black, green to light green, light red to dark red, and white
Close-up image showing the security and privacy facts of the product as a short summary saying what kind of data is collected, if it’s shared, whether security updates are automatic, and what kind of access control it has, eg user-changeable passwords, multifactor authentication, or biometric authentication
Another closeup of the QR code label, this time showing that a device collects data for tailored advertising and monetization.
