Did a ghost ship break internet cables running beneath the Red Sea?
It’s a grim end for the cargo ship Rubymar, currently at the bottom of the Red Sea following a missile strike by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. But did it destroy some key internet infrastructure during its final voyage?
According to Wired, satellite data combined with details of network disruptions shows the ship’s anchor is likely responsible for damaging subsea internet cables, disrupting networks from East Africa to Vietnam. An upcoming repair mission should solve the mystery.
