Oscars 2024 news winners nominees – Breaking News & Latest Updates 2026

Last year’s Academy Awards were dominated by Everything Everywhere all at Once, which took home seven awards including Best Picture. And the 2024 edition of the Oscars has the potential for a similar narrative. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has the best chance of stealing the show, leading the way with a total of 13 nominations, but Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things (11 nominations) and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (10 nominations) are also good bets.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie could make some noise as well, with eight noms including Best Picture. There are also the streaming services to keep an eye on (Netflix has a hefty 18 nominations, led by Maestro) and a few intriguing categories, like whether Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron takes home the statue for best animated feature film. Which is all to say there are some good storylines to follow this year.

The 2024 Oscars will take place on March 10th at 7PM ET — but you can keep up with all of the winners and major developments right here.

  • You might just be able to get your hands on those killer Godzilla Minus One shoes.

With all the focus on the Godzilla Minus One creative team bringing their Godzilla action figures to the Oscars, you might have missed the inspired shoes they wore to the ceremony. And while the kicks seemed like they might have been one-of a kind customs, it sounds like fashion brand Hazama is open to the idea of selling them to the public.

Like many of the movies up for Oscars, this year’s Academy Awards ran longer than most viewers probably considered reasonable. But lengthy as the ceremony was, it was marked by enough surprises to make it one one hell of a watch.

Though host Jimmy Kimmel made sure to get a few good jabs in at most of the filmmakers up for Oscars, few of the stars seemed all that phased as they took to the stage to deliver acceptance speeches that spoke to how stiff this year’s competition was. Da’Vine Joy Randolph kicked off the night winning Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in The Holdovers — which was up for five awards total. And while Hayao Miyazaki wasn’t there to accept his award, The Boy and the Heron took home an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Out of the five awards director Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall was up for, it wound up taking home Best Original Screenplay, while writer / director Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction snagged Best Adapted Screenplay.

“I’d like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.”

Fresh off winning the best actor in a leading role award last year, Brendan Fraser presented this year’s award to Cillian Murphy for his performance in Oppenheimer. “I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight,” Murphy said.

    Have we had Kenough?

Dressed in pink, of course, Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson pulled all the stops during their performance of Barbie’s Best Original Song nominee “I’m Just Ken.” Featuring the other Kens, audience participation, and an appearance from Slash (!!!???) the Kenergy was high.

    What’s up doc.

There were some great documentaries nominated this year, and the winners were The Last Repair Shop (short film) and 20 Days in Mariupol (feature film). If you need to catch up, they’re pretty accessible to stream from home.

  • SKREE-ONNK (Godzilla would like to thank the Academy.)

The crew of Godzilla Minus One have made sure to have Godzilla (in toy form) close by all through this year’s awards season, so of course they brought the big guy up to accept their Oscars for Best Visual Effects.

“I needed this job more than it needed me.”

As with the best supporting actress award, a quintet of past winners were on stage to present Robert Downey Jr. with the best supporting actor statue for his performance in Oppenheimer. He beat out a pretty stacked group including Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Ryan Gosling (Barbie), and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things).

    Looking good, Poor Things.

The film’s team of Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston took home the Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling, while the movie also won for production design, thanks to the crew of James Price, Shona Heath, and Zsuzsa Mihalek. On top of all of that, a naked John Cena presented a third award to Poor Things for costume design, with Holly Waddington accepting the award.

  • Remember Thunderforce? The Academy does.

Whoever planned out the presentation for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay at this year’s Oscars is clearly a fan of Netflix’s Thunderforce, a movie you definitely remember.

    The screenplay winners.

Anatomy of a Fall’s Justine Triet and Arthur Harari scooped up the best original screenplay award, while Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction snagged best adapted screeenplay — and used the opportunity to urge Hollywood to take a chance on similarly risky movies.

    The night is getting animated.

First, War is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko took home the statue for best animated short. That was followed by Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron — which may not actually be his final movie — winning the feature film category, though Miyazaki wasn’t on hand to accept.

    And the first winner is...

A squad of five former winners were on stage to present the award for Actress in a Supporting Role, each going into detail about why the nominees were being honored tonight. It was much more touching than the typical reveal. Da’Vine Joy Randolph ultimately won for her performance in The Holdovers, beating out Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), America Ferrera (Barbie), and Jodie Foster (Nyad).
