Apple

Founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple is best known for making some of the world’s most ubiquitous consumer devices, software, and services: the iPhone, iPad, iMac and MacBook computers, Apple TV, Apple Watch, iOS, iCloud, iTunes, Apple Music, Apple Pay, and many more. Led by CEO Tim Cook since 2011, Apple is one of the largest technology companies in the world alongside Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Facebook.

You can already buy cheap copies of Apple’s $230 crossbody iPhone sock.

Both versions of the 3D-knitted iPhone Pocket quickly sold out earlier this month. Apple hasn’t announced any plans to restock the limited edition accessory created in collaboration with Japanese designer Issey Miyake, but there already plenty of reproductions on sites like AliExpress selling for much less than the real thing.

You might not see CNN on your Apple News feed for a bit.

Over the weekend, CNN yanked its stories from the Apple News app as it tries to work out a deal that would bring its content back to the platform, according to a report from Semafor.

CNN has gotten more aggressive about monetizing its content over the past year, with the outlet paywalling some of its articles and once again launching a streaming service.

Vapor vs. Zoom.

The latest ads featuring Apple and Google’s mobile flagships could combine for a Nike football cleat and appeared within hours of each other today, before likely going into rotation over the holiday.

The Honor 500 looks Air-y familiar.

In Honor’s defense, the China-only 500 and 500 Pro aren’t especially thin phones, so they’re not cribbing on the iPhone Air in that sense. But that camera module has certainly been copying some of Apple’s homework.

A nice little Thanksgiving treat.

Apple announced that it’s dropping the latest episode of Pluribus a bit early this week, and it’ll be streaming on Wednesday. Now there’s something for Carol to be happy about for once.

Maybe Tim Cook isn’t preparing to retire.

Last week, rumors started flying that Tim Cook might step down as CEO next year and be replaced by John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. Well, Bloomberg’s Marc Gurman says, not so fast. He claims those reports are simply false, and that while the company is certainly planning for Cook’s eventual retirement, it’s unlikely to happen in 2026.

Gurman:

Yes, Apple will eventually have a new leader. And, yes, it’s probably Ternus. But unless there is some unexpected event that forces Cook to step down sooner than planned, that moment is not at hand.

Apple loses another notable industrial designer.

Abidur Chowdhury, who worked on the iPhone Air and introduced it during Apple’s September event, has reportedly left for an AI startup. Even though the phone hasn’t sold well, “his exit is unrelated to the debut of the phone, which has seen its design praised despite underwhelming sales,” according to Bloomberg.

The Mac Pro just isn’t important to Apple anymore.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company doesn’t see the high-end desktop as a key part of its lineup. It hasn’t been updated with any regularity since 2013, moving to Apple silicon belatedly in 2023 with the M2 Ultra. Over two years later, it remains unchanged. Gurman says not to expect a significant update in 2026 either, with the M4 Ultra chip and its corresponding Mac Pro model being cancelled.

Apple has largely written off the Mac Pro. The sentiment internally is that the Mac Studio now represents both the present and future of Apple’s professional desktop strategy.

Apple hit with $634 million verdict in patent battle with Masimo.

A federal jury in California sided with medical tech company Masimo in its suit alleging that the Apple Watch infringed on its patent covering low-power pulse oximeter features. The victory hinged on the definition of the term “patient monitor,” which Apple argued only applied to devices that provided continuous monitoring, while the Apple Watch’s blood oxygen features only kick in after 10 minutes of inactivity. This case is separate from the one working its way through the ITC.

Mophie’s new iPhone 17 battery cases include a slim option for the iPhone Air.

This week the company launched three new versions of its Juice Pack cases. They’re all $99.99 but the iPhone 17 Pro‌ version has a 3,000mAh battery while the 17 Pro Max one is 3,600mAh providing 50 percent more power. The iPhone Air case has a 2,400mAh battery providing up to 60 percent more power.

Fixing the wrong problem.

Tesla might be about to give in and adopt Apple’s CarPlay system in its cars. It’s a welcome change, but somehow I suspect this commenter isn’t the only one holding out on a Model Y purchase for slightly different reasons.

Brian Ford:

Unfortunately, the addition of CarPlay won’t erase the other dealbreaker for me.

Apple says developers must get permission from users to share their data with third-party AI.

Apple noted requirement as part of its updated App Review Guidelines changelog:

5.1.2(i): Clarifies that you must clearly disclose where personal data will be shared with third parties, including with third-party AI, and obtain explicit permission before doing so.

You can see the full guidelines on Apple’s website.

Apple and MLS might get rid of their dedicated MLS streaming service.

Instead of offering MLS Season Pass as a separate subscription, you might be able to watch MLS games next season with just a base Apple TV subscription, like how Apple TV will be the place to watch F1 in the US, ESPN reports.
