Today’s Vergecast: AI is dividing the math world in two.

Over the last several months, the AI industry has set its sights on some of the problems that have stymied mathematicians for years. In some cases, AI models have made huge progress — though exactly how much isn’t always obvious. The Verge’s Robert Hart explains what OpenAI and others have actually accomplished, the disastrously bad ways the companies have interacted with researchers, and whether there’s a future left for human mathematics.

Zoom is launching a new “deepfake risk detection” tool for video calls.

The feature analyzes video and audio signals to determine whether they “may have been altered outside of Zoom.” The video conferencing app is also launching a tool that uses AI to make presenters “appear more engaged,” as well as an AI-powered feature that smooths out voices and accents in real time.

The new features are launching in December 2026.

Meta’s Muse AI hits 10 million US downloads.

The AI assistant, which launched in September, is only the 12th app to have reached this milestone within 40 days, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. Part of its success is likely down to what Sensor Tower describes as a sizable “advertising push by Meta.”

Perplexity Computer can now run fully offline on Mac — but you’ll need a lot of RAM.

This update allows you to perform tasks across your apps and files without transmitting data to the cloud, but Perplexity recommends 36GB of RAM or more. It uses Apple Silicon to run Qwen 3.6 or PPLX Pro (a post-trained version of Qwen) directly on your Mac, while allowing you to transfer certain tasks to the cloud for access to updated information and browser use.

Nvidia can’t fulfill China’s $35 billion chip demands.

ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent have reportedly collectively ordered more than 3 million of Nvidia’s RTX Pro 5500 GPUs, among the most powerful still compliant with US export controls. Those orders far exceed planned production, however, and Reuters reports that Nvidia has warned customers they might only get 5 to 10 percent of what they requested.

This indie vampire game is keeping its playtest private because of AI clones.

Digital Sun thanked Steam players for signing up for a first playtest of an upcoming game called ReVamp, but said that:

As stated on our socials, we’ve been concerned by recent news of games being reverse-engineered, cloned and published before the original is even out. With launch still months away, sharing a build with tens of thousands of players felt like too big a risk for ReVamp.

The studio adds that “We’d also love to see platforms keep strengthening protections for original work, so studios of every size can keep sharing their games early.”

Gemini Notebook will now lay out its plans before generating a slide deck or video.

The AI note-taking app will use your sources to suggest topics for a slide deck or video, while allowing you to confirm decisions on formatting, visual style, and scope before it starts creating.
