Microsoft and OpenAI deal may face antitrust investigations in the EU.

If it pushes through, the European Commission could look into whether Microsoft’s $13 billion investment into OpenAI restricts competition, Reuters reports. The commission floated the possibility of an investigation in January.

The partnership between the two companies already drew scrutiny from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority and the Federal Trade Commission in the US.

Is your healthcare provider breaking antitrust laws?

Federal antitrust enforcers are working with the Department of Health and Human Services to collect examples of harm to healthcare competition through a new website. Meta is temporarily shutting Threads down in Turkey on April 29th.

Because of a temporary injunction (PDF) from the Turkish Competition Authority (TCA), which ruled that linking Threads and Instagram data without user opt-in abuses Meta’s social media dominance. Turkish Threads users can either delete their profiles or deactivate them until / if the service gets turned back on.

TechCrunch notes the country had previously fined Meta $18.6 million in 2022 for data-sharing across its apps.

Following a decision by the Turkish Competition Authority, Threads will no longer be available in Türkiye starting from 29 April 2024. Your profile will be deactivated, but you’ll be able to download your information and delete your profile at any time. We value the Threads community in Türkiye and hope to be back soon.

Google’s blog post takes jabs at Europe’s Digital Markets Act.

Google says it’s just pointing out trade-offs in the law as it details “concerns we’re hearing” since complying with the new rules.

This includes greater traffic to travel aggregators (think: Booking.com and Trivago) at the expense of engagement with airline and hotel sites. Google says hotels have seen direct booking clicks fall, driving them to intermediaries that charge fees. And, consumers who dislike that it’s harder to find Maps on Google Search.
