The newest Supreme Court fallout: telecoms trying to avoid unlocking your phone.

T-Mobile is invoking the major questions doctrine, which the Supreme Court strengthened in 2022, to explain why the FCC shouldn’t make companies unlock phones within 60 days of activation for use with other carriers. These are just comments, not a lawsuit — but they’re not hard to read as a signal of a potential future legal fight.

The iPhone 15 Pro will let you take 3D photos soon.

The device already supports spatial video, but the latest iOS 18.1 developer beta brings spatial photos to the iPhone 15 Pro too. This allows for a more immersive experience when viewing photos on Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

The iPhone 16 will also come with support for spatial photos and videos when it launches later this week.

AT&T will pay the FCC $13 million to settle a hacking investigation.

The FCC investigated AT&T’s “supply chain integrity” after hackers stole customer data from a vendor’s cloud environment in January 2023. “AT&T failed to ensure the vendor: (1) adequately protected the customer information, and (2) returned or destroyed it as required by contract,” the FCC says.

AT&T also entered into a consent decree as part of the settlement.

Blackmagic’s free Camera app is now available on Samsung’s folding phones.

When it launched on Android in June, the app only supported the Samsung Galaxy S23, S24, and the Google Pixel 7/8 lineups. Compatibility with OnePlus and Xiaomi phones running Android 13 was added later, but Blackmagic has released another update adding features like recording timecode, plus support for the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5/6 and Fold 5/6 phones.

Verizon halved my $10 AutoPay discount out of the blue — just because it can.

Starting October 10th, along with many, many others, I’ll be paying another $5 per month. Verizon has been smoking out grandfathered plans with price hikes, hoping customers will switch to “myPlan,” but possible savings will come at a loss of benefits to the customer.

We want to let you know about an upcoming change to your Auto Pay discount. Here’s what to expect: While we continue to offer Auto Pay benefits, your $10/line discount will be reduced to $5/mo. and your bill will increase starting on or after 10.10.2024. However, your current plan price and benefits will remain unchanged. You also have the option of moving to myPlan, where you’ll receive an Auto Pay discount of $10/mo for every line you switch.
Thanks guys.

Now I’m thinking modular phones need to make a comeback.

Nothing’s $200 CMF Phone 1 only shipped with swappable cases and a stand to start, but this Bambu Lab contest inspired makers to put all kinds of awesome 3D printed contraptions on the back of the phone.

Maybe we don’t need Project Ara — just user-replaceable batteries (pretty please) and some user-facing screws!

Watch LG’s stretchable display strut down the fashion runaway.

Your folding phone’s screen isn’t anywhere near this flexible, in case you’re wondering. They said we’d see the twistable, stretchable display at Seoul Fashion Week, and sure enough:
