WhatsApp could offer yet another way to share files with people nearby.

iOS has AirDrop, Android has Nearby/Quick Share, and soon it looks like WhatsApp might offer an alternative. Its unreleased file-sharing feature was spotted by WABetaInfo in a beta release of WhatsApp’s Android app, and says file transfers are end-to-end encrypted. There’s no word on when it’ll release, but as readers have pointed out it has the potential to bring cross platform sharing to about 2 billion WhatsApp users worldwide.

Update January 22nd, 7:55AM ET: Updated to mention obvious advantage pointed out by commenters which my 8AM brain completely missed.

iFixit says getting to the Motocompacto’s battery is “a bit of a pain in the arse chore.”

The site’s teardown showed the company’s engineers “spared at least some thought” to making it something you can fix yourself, ultimately giving it a middling score.

One thing is for sure: it is a suitcase-shaped electric scooter.

The Rabbit R1’s built-in audio is the worst way to listen to The Gorillaz.

Rabbit’s founder, Jesse Lyu, showed off the buzzy AI gadget’s vision capability in a video that kicks off with it playing “Feel Good Inc” by The Gorillaz.

Pointing your R1 at your computer isn’t a particularly great way to keep up with your friends on Discord, but the video is clearly just meant to demo its real-time interpretation of what it sees, which Lyu said in the post will get faster.

Japan’s “Moon Sniper” craft successfully landed on the Moon.

The country’s Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) used vision-based navigation (hence its nickname) to help it land on Friday. Ars Technica has a detailed explanation for how this all worked, while a translated video published on The Independent’s YouTube channel offers insight, as well.

Unfortunately, the craft’s solar panels malfunctioned, leaving it with only hours of battery left. A disappointing facet of the story. In the meantime, please enjoy this perfectly 80s arcade-style logo from Moon Sniper’s press materials (PDF).

A picture of the Moon Sniper logo, which has stylized lettering, a picture of a moon, crosshairs, and says “SLIM PROJECT” beneath it.
I really want to play the Moon Sniper arcade game.

It’s no playing card in bike wheel spokes...

But there’s something satisfying about this TikTok account’s low-tech videos using popsicle sticks, some thick wire, some cardboard, and a power drill to simulate engine sounds.

NASA is back in touch with the Mars Ingenuity helicopter.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) says it reestablished contact by having the Perseverance rover “perform long-duration listening sessions for Ingenuity’s signal.” The agency had lost contact with Ingenuity on Thursday, just as it was ending its 72nd Mars flight.

It’s good news for the bots, which are part of the Mars Sample Return mission that’s been beset by budget cuts and layoffs at JPL.

OpenAI banned a political chatbot developer in its first election misinformation action.

Yesterday, The Washington Post reported that AI start-up Delphi cannot use OpenAI’s platform after it created Dean.Bot, a chatbot mimicking Representative Dean Phillips (D-MN) for a super PAC supporting his presidential bid.

The bot ran afoul of OpenAI’s recently adopted misinformation policy that, among other things, disallows political campaigning using ChatGPT. The super PAC will reportedly try again with an open-source alternative.

Two million hype!

AGDQ 2024 has just raised $2 million dollars for charity! The charity speedrunning event first broke the $2 million threshold back in 2017 and surpassed that with $3 million just two years later.

So while AGDQ 2024 likely won’t break any donation records, it was still great to witness the milestone live. Hooray!

Using chatbots for customer service is going really well.

DPD, a package delivery company based in Europe, said it has used AI-powered customer chat “successfully for a number of years,” according to a BBC story yesterday.

But this week a series of screenshots showed the chatbot swearing, insulting DPD, and writing a bad, self-deprecating poem about how useless it was. The company blamed a recent update and disabled the chat to address it, the article said.

One of Google’s goals for this year: “deliver durable cost savings.”

I published the full list of Google’s 2024 company goals that were recently shared internally in the last issue of Command Line:

1. Deliver the world’s most advanced, safe, and responsible AI.

2. Improve knowledge, learning, creativity, and productivity.

3. Build the most helpful personal computing platforms and devices.

4. Enable organizations and developers to innovate on Google Cloud.

5. Provide the world’s most trusted products and platforms.

6. Build a Google that’s extraordinary for Googlers and the world.

7. Improve company velocity, efficiency, and productivity, and deliver durable cost savings.

That last line, plus CEO Sundar Pichai’s warning to expect more “specific resource allocation decisions” (translation: layoffs), has a lot of employees on edge.

What if omnidirectional treadmill, but for multiple people at once?

I’m very intrigued by the Holo Tile demo that the Disney Parks YouTube account posted earlier this week. It’s a little like an omnidirectional VR treadmill that multiple people can use (just, you know, very slowly).

The tech looks to be in very early stages, but if you squint, it almost makes Star Trek: TNG’s holodecks seem feasible.
