Layoffs hit a Gearbox studio.

Some staffers at Lost Boys Interactive, a studio that has worked on games like Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Diablo IV, have been laid off, as reported by Aftermath.

One former producer said on LinkedIn that the layoffs affected a “sizable portion” of Lost Boys Interactive; Aftermath says the company had employed more than 400 people. We spotted a Washington State WARN Act notice that says 125 workers are affected companywide.

Google is making it easier to share a doc.

Google is adding a dropdown to the “Share” Button on Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawings where you can access things like the “Copy link” tool. As someone who uses and shares Google Docs all the time, this will save many seconds of my life.

This feels long overdue.

Microsoft caveated who might see its new Copilot AI Windows 11 test.

The company initially said some Windows Insiders on “widescreen devices” would have to deal with Copilot automatically launching, but Microsoft updated its blog post to caveat that even further:

We’re trying this experience out on devices that have minimum diagonal screen size of 27” and pixel width of 1920 pixels and limited to primary display screens in multi-monitor scenarios.

So, while the test still seems like it could be annoying, it requires a pretty specific setup to even be eligible for it.

What do you do when men of the internet keep hitting on your bot?

I have often wondered why internet assistants invariably have female names. Anyway, here’s an easy solution to the problem from Ask A Manager:

As for what to do … if you just want it to stop, the easiest answer is to change the name to a very male-sounding one. I will personally pay you thousands of dollars if changing the bot’s name to Wayne doesn’t put an immediate end to this.

You can be The Last of Us’ composer. Really.

By playing as the actual composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, in The Last of Us Part II Remastered’s guitar freeplay mode. The banjo is an option, too.

The game comes out on January 19th.

Senators are urging the SEC to investigate how its X account was hacked.

After the SEC’s X account was hijacked to post the agency’s premature approval of Bitcoin ETFs, Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) are looking for answers — particularly, whether the SEC had 2FA turned on.

SEC’s failure to follow cybersecurity best practices is inexcusable, particularly given the agency’s new requirements for cybersecurity disclosure... We urge you to investigate the agency’s practices related to the use of MFA, and in particular, phishing-resistant MFA, to identify any remaining security gaps that must be addressed.

LG’s other transparent TV is the one I want in my living room.

LG’s DukeBox is pitched as a modern-day jukebox, but in person, it’s got much more potential.

A smooth-sounding 3D audio speaker with a 30-inch transparent OLED display that lets you see its retro-style insides and displays album art, the DukeBox is also a TV.

The music controls on the screen are just for show — it’s not a touch screen. But if LG ever ships this concept product it should totally be one. It would make a gorgeous smart display.

OpenAI is softening its stance on military use.

The ChatGPT maker already didn’t have an outspoken public stance on the issue, but The Intercept reports that it’s removed a terms of service ban for “military and warfare” use of its tech — though it still bans things like using it for weapons development.

The US military has long-standing and sometimes fraught dealings with tech giants, and it’s been exploring how to use generative AI. As reported by Bloomberg, the military ran an exercise to test how to use large language models to plan responses to global crises.

Android might get lock screen widgets once again.

Android expert Mishaal Rahman found some evidence that lock screen widgets could make a return, perhaps with Android 15. Check out his report in Android Authority for the details.
