TSMC awarded $11.6 billion CHIPS funding ahead of Trump presidency.

The announcement secures the preliminary agreement that was made in April to help construct a new semiconductor factory in Phoenix, Arizona by 2030. President-elect Donald Trump has criticized the CHIPS Act, which now faces an uncertain future when he retakes the White House.

The statement from President Joe Biden says:

Today’s announcement is among the most critical milestones yet in the implementation of the bipartisan CHIPS & Science Act, and demonstrates how we are ensuring that the progress made to date will continue to unfold in the coming years, benefitting communities all across the country.

Bluesky is having its “highest traffic day ever.”

Rough timing for the outages today. After crossing 15 million users yesterday, the site is already past 16 million today.

Here’s proof that iOS 18 reboots your iPhone if you don’t use it.

As spotted by TechCrunch, researcher Jiska Classen posted a video showing that iOS 18 will reboot your iPhone after three days of inactivity. The security feature, which 404 Media originally reported on, is apparently making it more difficult for police to break into suspects’ phones.

Xbox’s AI-enhanced search is rolling out now.

As my colleague Tom Warren reported last week, Xbox’s AI-powered search will let you enter things like, “FPS games with zombies” or “cozy farming games with fishing,” which should come in handy if you forget the title of a game, or don’t know what you’re looking for.

The upgraded search experience is coming to the Xbox console and Xbox app on Windows.

Elon Musk reportedly had a meeting with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations this week.

According to The New York Times, the session between Musk and Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani was described by Iranian officials as “a discussion of how to defuse tensions between Iran and the United States.”

Musk will co-lead the “Department of Government Efficiency” under president-elect Donald Trump’s administration.

Trump picks anti-vax Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead Health and Human Services.

The President-elect chose his former political opponent and anti-vaccine activist to lead HHS, a department that oversees the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Kennedy has embraced policies widely rejected by the scientific community, like halting the addition of fluoride to drinking water — a mineral that helps prevent tooth decay.

Well, that went as expected.

Amazon announced a $20-and-under “Haul” section yesterday to compete with platforms like Temu — and it’s already filled with questionable listings.

ModernRetail rounded up a few, and scrolling through Amazon, it’s not totally clear to me whether images are AI-generated or just very poorly edited (probably both). You have to hand it to Amazon, though: it does look exactly like Temu.

An Amazon Haul product image for a pair of women’s pajamas. The model is inexplicably in what appears to be a park.

ChatGPT’s Mac app will be able to read your code.

The AI chatbot can now “see” what’s on your screen in VS Code, Xcode, Terminal, and iTerm2, allowing ChatGPT to provide suggestions or answer questions about your code without having to copy and paste it into the app using its “Work with Apps” option that’s currently in beta testing.

Though ChatGPT still can’t write code directly within coding platforms, it seems OpenAI is working on that.

Stephen King is taking a stand.

King, who might be partially responsible for the original $8 starting price for Elon Musk’s Twitter Blue (now X Premium), is leaving for Threads. Here’s his Threads profile.
