Classified Ukraine war documents showed up on Twitter and Telegram.

The Times suggests the files are a mix of real and doctored information about the US and NATO’s plans in Ukraine that might have been leaked by Russia:

“We are aware of the reports of social media posts and the department is reviewing the matter,” said Sabrina Singh, the deputy press secretary at the Pentagon.

So far, it’s not clear how platforms (particularly Twitter) will respond to their release.

The AI defamation claims are starting, as foretold.

For all the fears about world-ending AI nightmare scenarios, the clearest problem with AI search so far is that it makes stuff up. That includes potentially libelous claims like baselessly accusing a professor of sexual misconduct or an Australian politician of bribery, two events both recounted in news stories today. The latter might lead to ChatGPT’s first defamation suit — something we’ve discussed the complications of (under US law, at least) before. Whatever happens with these incidents, it seems nearly inevitable somebody will sue over AI “hallucinations” soon.

Please help these poor AIs rate their ASCII art.
A screenshot from Janelle Shane’s AI Weirdness blog, showing ChatGPT drawing an ASCII art “shark” that looks like a triangle and rating its own work 8 out of 10.
A great representation of a shark!

The internet is doing something to our memories.

And former Verge reporter Lauren Goode is writing a book about it! If you haven’t had the good fortune of reading her Wired feature about being followed by the ghost of a canceled wedding across the web, it would make an excellent weekend read.

The Fox News election defamation case will go to trial next month.

Defamation law is one of the rare limits to US speech protections, so we’re watching the outcome of voting machine company Dominion’s lawsuit against Fox News closely. How are things going for Fox?

“The evidence developed in this civil proceeding demonstrates that is CRYSTAL clear that none of the Statements relating to Dominion about the 2020 election are true,” wrote Judge Eric Davis in his 81-page ruling.

    Not great so far.

The White House says it won’t pay Elon Musk for blue checks.

Add “the Biden administration” to the list of organizations that won’t be paying for staff to keep their blue checks on Twitter:

”It is our understanding that Twitter Blue does not provide person-level verification as a service. Thus, a blue check mark will now simply serve as a verification that the account is a paid user,” White House director of digital strategy Rob Flaherty told staffers in an email sent Friday afternoon.

The message specifically applied to White House staffers, so other agencies may have different policies — but we may see a lot of unverified government users soon.

Magic Leap is a little salty about the Apple AR headset.

Poor Magic Leap — it really does have a decent augmented reality headset these days, but it was way, way too early to the consumer AR party, and now Apple is the guest of honor. No wonder it’s venting a little schadenfreude at Apple’s apparent internal woes.
