Back in July, during an internal Q&A with Mark Zuckerberg, a recruiter at Meta introduced himself as “Gary from Chicago” and asked if the company planned to keep the extra vacation days it introduced during the pandemic. The exchange was featured prominently in a story I wrote with David Pierce at the time about the cultural reckoning happening inside Meta as it was bracing for tougher times ahead.
Fast forward to today, and Meta has just laid off 11,000 employees, the most of any big tech companies to date. I’ve been able to confirm that Gary from Chicago was, sadly, one of those laid off. 🫡
