It sure looks like iOS 16.4 is coming out next week.

Apple has released the final betas, also know as “release candidate” versions, for the forthcoming iOS 164, iPadOS 16.4, watchOS 9.4, tvOS 16.4, and macOS Ventura 13.3. These are usually released about a week before the full public release of new software versions.

As for what to expect, perhaps the most exciting thing is 21 new emoji, but there’s also the ability for third-party browsers to save webapps to the iPhone’s homescreen plus things like a relaunch of the new HomeKit architecture that was pulled after release in 16.2.

Here’s how excited I am to see the BlackBerry movie.

    Seriously, it looks great.

Former BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie was very excited for the Playbook, a tablet you either never heard of or forgot about at least a decade ago.

Here’s how each voice assistant works for the smart home.

So many comparisons between the Google Assistant, Siri, and Alexa focus on how well they answer random facts like how tall the Eiffel tower is. That’s a nifty party trick, but it’s not how I use a voice assistant in my life.

I appreciated this video from Smart Home Solver that instead drills deep on how well each assistant works in a smart home context, which is how I interact with them most often.

Where does your old phone go after you trade it in for a new one?

A big warehouse in New Jersey, apparently.

Joanna Stern at The Wall Street Journal has a fun story on what happens to your old phone and how the companies that end up with it make money on refurbished device sales. You can read the article or check out the video below.

    Today is Pi Day.

It’s March 14th, which means that if you write the date like people do in America, it’s 3/14, or close enough to 3.14 that a bunch of nerds say it’s Pi Day.

But Real Nerds celebrate the true circle constant, Tau, on June 28th. I won’t stop you from eating actual pie today or any other day, though.

    Yellow phone is yellow.

    Other things that are yellow:

Bananas. Minions. Pokémon. The new Prius. French’s mustard. Cowards.

Apple’s new yellow iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will be available to order starting this Friday, March 10th.

Apple is finally fixing the remote disconnection bug on the latest Apple TV 4K.

If you’ve got a brand new Apple TV 4K, you might have experienced the remote disconnection bug that periodically prevents the remote from working requiring a reset of it to get it working again (until the disconnection happens again).

Today, Apple released tvOS 16.3.3 specifically for the latest Apple TV 4K to fix this annoying bug. Hopefully that’s the last we’ll hear of this one, but it doesn’t change the fact that set top boxes suck.

My family is not ready for how annoying I’m going to be with iOS 16.4’s ability to make Siri say anything using Shortcuts.

One of the new features coming in iOS 16.4 is the ability to automate a HomePod’s intercom feature to get Siri to say basically anything you want. YouTuber Shane Whatley demonstrates a few practical use cases for it (programming Siri to give you a personalized morning routine message, for example), but I can’t wait to harass my family through Siri’s voice with the most annoying things in the near future.
