Actually, what you are referring to is a typeface.

The Washington Post has an interesting, interactive article on how different typefaces can influence how legible something is and how fast you can read it. It turns out there isn’t any one perfect typeface for everyone — lots of factors come in to play to determine which is best for you.

For me, I read sans-serif styles the fastest, but when I want to get into Serious Book Mode, I’m probably choosing a serif typeface.

The Pixel Fold shows how far ahead Samsung’s folding phones are

Google’s Pixel Fold is the first real competition for Samsung in the US folding phone market. But it doesn’t make up for Samsung’s multiyear head start.

Here’s one way to make the Pixel Tablet a useful smart home dashboard.

One of the things I was disappointed with on the Pixel Tablet was its inability to be an always-on smart home dashboard — all it lets you do is launch a page of device toggle shortcuts.

But if you use Home Assistant and set up a webpage-based dashboard for it, you can install a kiosk app on the Pixel Tablet to show that page even when it’s docked and locked. Then you can have instant access to smart home controls, climate settings, and even live feeds from cameras. My favorite thing about it might be that it uses the Pixel Tablet’s camera to wake the screen whenever you walk in front of it.

Bonus: it doesn’t interfere with any of the Pixel Tablet’s voice control or smart display functions.

I see your iOS 17 dev beta running on your primary iPhone and raise you Mac OS System 7 on a PocketChip.

ThisDoesNotCompute has a fun video on running Mac OS System 7 on a PocketChip, a handheld computer from 2016 that was powered by a board similar to a Raspberry Pi. Bonus: the video includes a bit of history about the PocketChip and the board inside of it, including the downfall of the company that made it.

    Blame this guy for Clippy.

Best fun fact: the design of Clippy was finished on a Mac.

    Welcome to eWorld.

Stephen Hackett over at 512 Pixels has gotten his hands on a promotional mailer for eWorld, Apple’s early 1990s web service portal, similar to Prodigy or AOL at the time. It was meant to introduce people to things like email, news, and other online services we take for granted now and it’s a fascinating time capsule.

Honestly, I’d like to go back to eWorld.

What’s the German word for trying to do too many things at once and not really being great at any of them?

I’m guessing it’s Vonmählen, a company that has a truly bizarre MagSafe battery pack that’s also an Apple Watch charger and also a data hub and also a Pop Socket and also a USB charger. It’s on Kickstarter (of COURSE), so buyer beware and all that.

A celebrated science fiction author reviews the iPad Pro.

I love John Scalzi’s books, he’s one of my favorite authors in my favorite genre. But what’s also great about John is he’s a nerd at heart, and his recent blog post about his experiences of using an iPad Pro on the road (in place of a Pixelbook, no less!) is a joy to read.

John, do get the matte screen protector — not only will it make writing with the Pencil easier and reduce glare, it helps a ton with the finger grease problem.

Google Pixel Tablet review: the dock makes all the difference

    Verge Score

Google’s first tablet in many years doesn’t try to reinvent what tablets are good for. Instead, it leans into being a good media consumption device and can be a useful smart display when you’re not holding it.
