    Disharmony in the ranks.

The Information reports Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has not been happy with the merger of DeepMind and Google Brain. The move was meant to combine Google’s AI efforts into one cohesive unit, but instead, both teams still compete for resources, lowering morale as Google competes with OpenAI.

Hassabis allegedly expressed his frustrations in public that the merger forced DeepMind to collaborate more on commercializing AI projects and has been losing staff to competitors.

    Circle up.

The Pixel Fold now has Circle to Search, the feature that lets people draw a circle, tap, or scribble on their screen to search for anything. It was first available on the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Samsung’s Galaxy S24.

And in teeny tiny script underneath its promo photo, Google said Circle to Search will be available on the Pixel Tablet soon.

What do artists want from AI regulation?

We’ll get closer to an answer in a panel I’m moderating at the Chicago Humanities Festival on April 13th. I’ll be joined by Kelly McKernan, an artist and one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Stability AI, and Jennifer deWinter, dean of Lewis College of Science and Letters at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Perplexity will try a form of ads on its AI search platform.

Perplexity’s chief business officer Dmitry Shevelenko tells Adweek the company is considering adding sponsored suggested questions to its platform. If users continue to search for more information on the same topic, Perplexity could start serving up suggested queries from brands. Shevelenko said the feature will be coming this year.

AI-powered search platforms like Perplexity are trying to compete with Google, but they still need to figure out a search business model that works.
