Amazon sellers can now use AI to put together product listings.

Generative AI capabilities let Amazon sellers create product titles, descriptions, and other details with a short prompt about the item. Once the bot is done, sellers can edit the text or use the AI-generated description.

Amazon says the majority of the sellers who tested the offering chose to go with the AI-made listing directly. Amazon isn’t the only one letting sellers use AI for product listings. eBay also debuted AI features earlier this month.

Sen. Blumenthal hopes to pass AI legislation by year’s end.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal said during a hearing from the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law that he hopes the US will pass licensing rules for AI companies. The proposal, which Blumenthal co-wrote with Sen. Josh Hawley, seeks to mandate developers of AI models register with an independent oversight agency.

Blumenthal, however, cannot control his peers and how fast the legislative process is. But he said the committee plans to convene more hearings to talk about regulating AI to help colleagues understand the technology so policymaking could go faster.

The IRS turns to AI to stop tax evasion by hedge funds, private equity, and law firms.

The agency said it doesn’t have enough resources or staff to untangle the complicated structures of large partnerships and spot potential tax evasion. So it will turn to machine learning for assistance.

With the help of AI, the selection of these returns is the result of groundbreaking collaboration among experts in data science and tax enforcement, who have been working side-by-side to apply cutting-edge machine learning technology to identify potential compliance risk in the areas of partnership tax, general income tax and accounting, and international tax in a taxpayer segment that historically has been subject to limited examination coverage.

Other government agencies have used machine learning to catch financial misconduct before. The Securities and Exchange Commission experimented with the technology back in 2017.

Elon Musk sparred with Larry Page over AI.

In an excerpt from Walter Isaacson’s upcoming biography of Musk, the X chairman reportedly “got into a passionate debate” with the Google co-founder over safeguards around AI during a party in 2013.

Musk allegedly shot back to Page:

Human consciousness, Musk retorted, was a precious flicker of light in the universe, and we should not let it be extinguished. Page considered that sentimental nonsense. If consciousness could be replicated in a machine, why would that not be just as valuable? He accused Musk of being a “specist,” someone who was biased in favor of their own species. “Well, yes, I am pro-human,” Musk responded. “I f-cking like humanity, dude.”

More than half the authors behind the Llama paper have left Meta.

The Information reports many of Meta’s researchers left for rival companies or other AI startups.

The researchers allegedly blamed internal competition for computing power as the company developed competing large language models and felt the Llama model, which was eventually released in July, was being ignored.
