Elon Musk promises (yet again) to not sell more Tesla stock.

He made the promise in a Twitter space, saying:

“I won’t sell stock until, I don’t know, probably two years from now. Definitely not next year under any circumstances and probably not the year thereafter.”

But as Electrek points out, Musk has made — and broken — this promise before.

Here’s your first look at Jodie Foster in True Detective season 4.

Yellow King? More like Yellow Queen!!!

No, I know that doesn’t make any sense, but remember when True Detective was the wildest, most compelling crime show on TV? It’s been a while. Who knows, though maybe, True Detective: Night Country can bring back some of the magic. Skip to 1:14 in the video below for the footage.

Marques Brownlee ranks 2022’s best smartphone cameras (with science).

Well, with Elo ratings specifically, but it’s a damn rigorous way to sort community votes (all 21.2 million of them) on the best pictures taken by 2022’s crop of smartphones. Brownlee’s big comparison videos are always worth a watch, and, like always, this one contains some surprising results.

Geralt of Rivia: confirmed horse girl.

The next-gen update for The Witcher 3 launched yesterday and provides some wonderful graphical updates for what’s always been a beautiful game. But, more importantly, it lets you pet Roach, Geralt’s beloved steed. Eurogamer reports that you just need to hold the jump button while walking up to Roach to trigger the interaction. One more reason to revisit the game.

Elon Musk loses title of world’s richest man.

Let that be a lesson to all you aspirational billionaires: don’t buy Twitter. Musk’s wealth, as tracked by Forbes, has taken a dip because of the falling share price of Tesla. As one analyst told BBC News:

“The Twitter circus show has hurt the Musk brand and it’s a major overhang on Tesla’s stock. Musk is Tesla and Tesla is Musk.”

Fake keyboards and live lip-syncs: how Chinese students beat online English tests.

This is a fascinating report here from Rest of World on the various methods used by students in China to fool US college entry exams — particularly those testing English language skills. A mix of tech tricks and cautious cheating help get the job done:

“Americans are not idiots, either,” he said. “If the scores are too high, they wouldn’t believe it.”

Forget AI moderation: Meta open sources new image hashing database.

Facebook-owner Meta has launched a new open source tool that uses image hashes to identify unwanted content like terrorist videos and child sexual exploitation material.

Software like this plays a hugely important (but mostly invisible) role in keeping social media safe, as demonstrated by Microsoft’s PhotoDNA tool.

Meta likes to boast about its fancy AI moderation, but tried-and-tested image hashing is where it’s at.

ChatGPT proves AI is finally mainstream — and things are only going to get weirder

Researchers talk about the ‘capability overhang’ — or hidden capabilities — of AI systems. As AI goes mainstream, we’re going to discover more and more.
