Meta’s AI translation project is tackling unwritten languages.

In February, Facebook’s parent company Meta announced it was working on an AI-powered “universal translator,” and yesterday shared an interesting first: it can now translate Hokkien, a “primarily oral” language from China.

It’s neat work, and shows how adaptable the underlying tech is. Meta says universal translation could be a killer app for the metaverse — though I’d prefer having just the translator myself.

Another Chinese CCTV-maker has been caught advertising cameras that identify “race” and “skin color.”

This time it’s a company called Dahua. A few years ago it was Hikvision. Dahua says the features were not “developed for commercial use,” but it’s suspected the Chinese government uses the tech to help suppress the country’s Uyghur minority. You can read more on that in this New York Times investigation from 2019.
