An easy resolution to clean up your inbox.

When my friend told me about his New Year’s resolution, I immediately decided to join him: every time he gets a marketing email he doesn’t want, he takes a few seconds to unsubscribe from it.

For the past few days, we’ve been like Legolas and Gimli comparing how many lists we’re no longer on. I know that the spam will inevitably creep back throughout the year, but for the next few months it’s going to be a lot easier to keep my inbox clean.

If you’re looking for a resolution, maybe join us and give this a try.

Let’s make 2023 the year of better web forms.

If you’re a web developer looking for a New Year’s Resolution, may I suggest making this the year that we stop endlessly bothering people with apostrophes, eñes, or other special characters in their names?

I understand that properly escaping and sanitizing inputs isn’t the easiest thing in the world, and that it’s better to err on the side of preventing SQL injection — but we have the technology that will keep our sites from getting hacked and that won’t tell people their names are invalid. Let’s use it.

Screenshot of a last name field with the word “O’Bryan” entered. An error message reads: “Invalid name. Allowable characters include letters, hyphens, apostrophes, and spaces.”
My wife got this error today because she wasn’t using the right type of apostrophe (read: she was using the one that’s the default on the iPhone keyboard). It is almost 2023.

It’s time for the Airborne Toxic Event.

White Noise, a movie based on the 1985 book of the same name staring Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, and Don Cheadle, is now streaming on Netflix.

The company is touting that the film features the first new single from LCD Soundsystem since 2018, though I can think of another band that would’ve been appropriate for the soundtrack as well.

    Biden’s losing an antitrust advocate.

Tim Wu, who invented the term “net neutrality,” is leaving his position at the National Economic Council, according to The New York Times. He joined in early 2021, aiming to work on technology and competition policy.

At the time, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) said she looked forward to working with him to “to modernize antitrust enforcement, strengthen our economy, and protect workers and consumers.” Wu tells the Times that he’s leaving the White House to spend more time with his family, and that he’ll be going back to his job as a Columbia Law School professor.
