Threads already has over 2 million users.

Launching a new social network on the back of one that has over a billion users has its advantages — new user accounts on Threads are already showing registration numbers beyond 2 million just two hours after its launch, which Mark Zuckerberg confirmed with a post.

Before the app opened its doors at 7PM ET, there were fewer than 3,000 registered accounts.

If you’re wondering what your number is — it’s listed on your account on Instagram after you join Threads. The official @TheVerge Threads account is #45,093.

    The legend @finkd lives.

Mark Zuckerberg logged in to his rarely-used Twitter account to post a quick joke on the day Instagram launched Threads, an app that is trying to be a lot like Twitter.

Jane Manchun Wong is working on Threads.

The leaker who’s uncovered so many features and unmentioned details in apps like Twitter and Instagram, now works for Meta on its new social platform.

That’s one way to keep her from finding and posting future Threads leaks; congratulations Jane!

    Soon.

If you didn’t already know Instagram’s Threads app is close to launching, perhaps a post from Adam Mosseri will seal the deal.

If Instagram Threads is available for Android on day one, maybe we have Siri to thank.

Adam Mosseri is so sick of Apple’s disappointing assistant that he switched back to Android. But he wouldn’t risk missing out on Instagram’s new platform, Threads, just to use Google Assistant... would he?

RIP to the old Instagram Threads (2019 - 2021).

You’d be excused for noticing that the name of Meta’s new Twitter competitor is very familiar. It already launched a different clone app tied to Instagram under the same name in 2019.

Like Google Currents (which entered the Google Graveyard in 2014 and in 2023), Instagram’s Threads name is being recycled after the first iteration was a messaging platform made for “close sharing” that was supposed to do battle with Snapchat until it shut down at the end of 2021.

Hopefully, this version of Threads has a better outcome.

July’s Google Pixel update is rolling out for the Pixel 4a, the Pixel Fold, and everything in between.

Whether your Pixel device was released in 2020 (Pixel 4A) or 2023 (Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet), it has an update coming its way.

The bug fixes listed mention charging, battery usage, or thermal performance, as well as addressing some UI issues.

But as Mishaal Rahman points out, the security fixes include several that Google says are under “limited, targeted exploitation” already, so make sure that patch is installed ASAP.

OpenAI is hyping the risks of future superintelligent AI again.

According to OpenAI’s critics, this talk of regulating superintelligence, otherwise known as artificial general intelligence, or AGI, is a rhetorical feint — a way for Altman to pull attention away from the current harms of AI systems and keep lawmakers and the public distracted with sci-fi scenarios.

Also today, CNBC reported SensorTower data shows ChatGPT and Bing app installs dropped 38 percent in June, while SimilarWeb data shows worldwide traffic to its website dropped 9.7 percent in June, along with a similar decline in minutes spent on the site.

Is it because kids are out of school and don’t need the bot to do their homework, or has the AI trend already found a peak for now?

A new update for the Asus ROG Ally is supposed to keep things safer for SD cards.

A note from Asus in late June mentioned issues with failing SD cards and said a future update would boost fan speed as a precaution. Now that update is here, labeled BIOS 322. It raises the fan curve when using it in Turbo mode, both on battery power and plugged in (via Windows Central).

Our updated review of the ROG Ally showed that, like the Steam Deck before it, software updates could go a long way to improving the handheld PC gaming experience.
