Yesterday Apple, Netflix, and Kanye West dominated our news cycle, so what’s in store for today? Liz Lopatto explains why we’re keeping an eye on Twitter and Elon Musk to see if the deal closes, and this afternoon Tesla will issue its latest quarterly earnings report.

Before that arrives, however, the latest feature story in our Homeland series is going out today, so stay tuned for that.

Just as 9/11 gave the US government cover to start two wars abroad, it became the justification to permanently undermine the civil rights of its people — an undermining of civil freedoms disguised as a big knee-jerk reaction.

The Verge’s “Homeland” project is a series of stories about surveillance, immigration, and technology that attempt to unmask the policies that have shaped the US in the 20 years since.

The strategy that keeps Google investing in Pixel even as its purse strings tighten.

The Information cites sources saying Google execs see the strategy as a defense against shifts in the market, like the chance it loses its iPhone browser deal or if Samsung slips.

But if you’re confused about why something like Stadia goes away or why Google focuses less on certain areas, then this section may help explain things.

[Sissie] Hsiao, a vice president in charge of Assistant, which is similar to Apple’s Siri voice assistant, has told some colleagues at Google that the Android Automotive operating system, used bycarmakers including Volvo and BMW to power their infotainment systems, could soon generate about $1 billion in revenue for Google annually.

That amount is too small to make a difference for the company, whose revenue last year was $257.6 billion, Hsiao said, which is why she has considered diverting some head count away from the effort, she said, according to a person briefed about the comments.

Twitch’s new unlicensed gambling ban takes effect today.

After a number of high-profile streamers threatened to boycott, Twitch announced new limits on gambling streams that are taking effect today.

However, as Ash Parrish wrote when they were announced, they don’t block everything:

There will be a carveout permitting sports betting, fantasy sports, and poker, while the streaming of slots, roulette, and dice is only prohibited if the websites streamed aren’t “licensed in the U.S. or other jurisdictions that provide sufficient consumer protection.”

Whether you prefer PlayStation or Xbox (or your phone — more on that in a moment), there are some new high-priced and customizable controller options to choose from.

Otherwise, something new from Apple seems primed to appear... well, any minute now, but we’ll have the updates for you if we see any new iPads in the store when it reopens.

Also, in case you missed it last night, Cadillac revealed the Celestiq EV, which is important to anyone shopping for a $300k hatchback.

Doxxing as a service — but only for VIPs.

After Parler cut a deal for Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) to buy the platform, its outreach team decided to give “gold-badged” members a special message assuring them nothing will change.

One thing that did change, however, is their privacy, as the email mixed up the CC and BCC fields, exposing the email address of everyone on the list, which included many right-wing writers, activists, and celebrities.

The newest Apex Legend, Catalyst, is a trans woman.

You can watch her introduction — and since this is Apex Legends, her accompanying tragic backstory — in this Stories of the Outlands trailer.

Respawn says she’s a “terraformer and defensive conjurer” who manipulates the battlefield with ferrofluid. Leaked videos from a few months ago suggested she has Fortnite-like quick-building capabilities.
