Business Insider lays off 21 percent of staff to “endure extreme traffic drops.”

As reported by The Information and Axios reporter Sara Fischer, CEO Barbara Peng emailed staff on Thursday announcing Business Insider is “scaling back on categories that once performed well on other platforms” and mostly exiting its search-reliant Commerce business in an apparent acknowledgement of Google Zero, despite Sundar Pichai’s rebuttals.

Now it’s shrinking, noting “70 percent of our business has some degree of traffic sensitivity,” while going all-in on AI with a push to use Enterprise ChatGPT, gen-AI site search, an AI paywall, and other products.

DeepSeek says a new R1 update is closing the gap with OpenAI o3 and Gemini 2.5 Pro.

The Chinese AI model that shook up the industry as a more cost-efficient alternative to the ones from OpenAI, Google, and Meta, now has a new update dubbed DeepSeek-R1-0528.

DeepSeek says its latest model has a reduced “hallucination” rate, and that it “has significantly improved its depth of reasoning and inference capabilities by leveraging increased computational resources and introducing algorithmic optimization mechanisms during post-training...overall performance is now approaching that of leading models, such as O3 and Gemini 2.5 Pro.”

Graph of AI benchmark results comparing the new DeepSeek model favorably to OpenAI o3, Gemini 2.5 Pro, and the original R1 model.

    “I love robots so much.”

Joanna Stern’s new video for the Wall Street Journal combines several AI tools, like Google Veo 2, the just-launched Veo 3, Midjourney, Runway, Suno, and ElevenLabs, to make this “My Robot and Me” short.

Beyond just seeing what they’re capable of in the hands of a skilled producer, Joanna also digs into how much all this would’ve cost (about $1,000), and shows off a few of the misfires created by the generators.

Meta splits its AI team to speed up rollouts.

The WSJ reported earlier this month that unnamed senior Meta execs were “frustrated” over a delayed rollout for the largest version of its Llama 4 AI model, dubbed Behemoth, and said management changes could follow.

Now, Axios reports there have been changes. Connor Hayes is leading the AI products team responsible for AI features in Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as the Meta AI Assistant and AI Studio, while Ahmad Al-Dahle and Amir Frenkel co-lead the AGI Foundations unit working on Llama models and other AI tech.

SpaceX’s ninth Starship flight test ends in another explosion.

For the third time in a row, a Starship test ended in a “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” after tumbling toward the Indian Ocean rather than making the planned controlled descent and soft splashdown.

As noted by Space.com, this mission ran into issues trying to achieve several goals: the reused Super Heavy booster rocket broke up about six minutes into the flight instead of splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico, they were unable to test deploying eight Starlink satellite dummies, and then the ship lost control about a half-hour after launch due to a leak in its fuel tank systems.

SpaceX’s ninth Starship flight test is close to taking off.

At 7:30PM ET, an hour-long launch window is scheduled to open for the ninth test of SpaceX’s Starship vehicle. After the seventh and eighth flight tests ended in massive explosions, the FAA has expanded the hazard area and required SpaceX to schedule its launch during “non-peak transit periods.”

Soon we’ll find out if the extra precaution is necessary for this flight. (Update: It launched, but experienced another rapid unscheduled disassembly.)

Anthropic’s voice mode for Claude launches in beta.

The conversational mode for Anthropic’s AI chatbot is now becoming available for users of its mobile apps, “gradually.”

TechCrunch notes that chief product officer Mike Krieger confirmed the rumored feature was on the way in a recent interview, while Anthropic says that it can integrate with Google Workspace, and that free users can expect “20-30 voice messages” before session limits cut them off, while paid users have higher limits.

Elon Musk reportedly approached Apple years ago about an iPhone / SpaceX satellite deal.

The Information reports that three years ago, Musk offered Apple an 18-month exclusive connection via SpaceX in return for $5 billion up front, and $1 billion per year after that to support satellite-connected iPhone features. If Apple didn’t take it within 72 hours, he threatened to announce a competing feature.

Apple went forward with Globalstar (the report also mentions a canceled “Project Eagle” effort with Boeing that would’ve delivered full-blown internet service), and before the iPhone 14 launched, Starlink announced a deal with T-Mobile. Later that year, Musk and Cook met at Apple HQ to discuss Twitter’s App Store presence, “among other things.”

Is adding SteamOS enough to ‘fix’ the Legion Go S?

Now that SteamOS 3.7.8 has added official support for Lenovo’s handheld gaming PC, as well as a recovery image for installation on other handhelds like the Rog Ally and original Legion Go, it’s time to find out.

YouTuber Dave2D seems impressed, saying the Steam version has better performance than the Windows version in some games, and better performance in some games than the Steam Deck OLED -- albeit with more wattage required.
