“Blackout zones” created by Hurricane Helene connect via temporary cell towers, Starlink.

A report by CBS 17 in Raleigh goes into how some of the communities in North Carolina’s mountains are communicating after the floods.

In Asheville, they said some people and organizations with Starlink satellite dishes have set them up at shelters so others can get online, along with “Satellite Cells on Light Trucks” and other temporary cellular towers.

Microsoft Flight Simulator’s connection to Bing.

Before launching a slimmed-down Flight Simulator 2024 next month, leader Jorg Neuman talked to Polygon, saying the game’s core business is still PC players who buy it outside of Game Pass.

Also, on the Bing Maps link:

Half the cities that we’re making [in our regular World Updates]? I currently have planes [gathering data] in Africa, South America, and Asia. I’m flying those planes because flight simmers want [those areas]....So I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m flying to Brazil. You want those?’ They’re like, ‘Yep!’

The price of ChatGPT will go up.

The New York Times reports that documents shown to potential investors in just another tech company have an interesting detail:

Roughly 10 million ChatGPT users pay the company a $20 monthly fee, according to the documents. OpenAI expects to raise that price by two dollars by the end of the year, and will aggressively raise it to $44 over the next five years, the documents said.

The proposed investment could value the company at $150 billion and give it two years to convert to a for-profit business before the funding becomes debt.

More rumors about that “HomePod with a screen.”

This time from 9to5Mac, citing unnamed sources who say that the “HomeAccessory” device referenced in code is a smart home accessory with an A18 chip, that’s capable of handling Apple Intelligence features, apps, and acting as an AirPlay receiver.

They also report a camera for gesture control and that the “current” J490 device has a square display instead of a rectangular one.

    Long live the HomeScreenPod.

Masimo CEO Joe Kiani has resigned.

The company with the blood oxygen sensing tech causing issues for Apple Watches has announced its CEO — who we just interviewed — is out after investors voted to remove him from the board amid a proxy battle with Politan Capital Management.

In a filing, Masimo said Kiani filed a claim against the company in California state court related to his employment agreement. Michelle Brennan has been appointed interim CEO.

Tesla sends out “We, Robot” invitations for its robotaxi event in October.

I’m not sure if this counts as Hollywood magic yet, but this is how Tesla’s promoting its robotaxi unveiling event. Elon Musk had announced an August date for the event, but then it was pushed back until October 10th.

The invitations say that remarks will begin at 7PM PT, if you’d like to clear some time in your schedule.

The Wear OS 5 update process didn’t go well for my Pixel Watch 2.

I forced the update after it came out yesterday but rebooted into a mostly blank screen saying “add tile,” which also happened to a few other people who posted about problems on Google’s support forum and Reddit.

After a fastboot reset (video walkthrough here), I was up and running, but you may want to hold off on this one.

NYT on the “genuine friendship” that links Laurene Powell Jobs and Kamala Harris.

This profile goes from a donation by Jobs to Harris’ first DA run in 2003, through personal trips together, and into their joint interview in 2017 at AllThingsD.

It also reports on Jobs’ role in mobilizing donors against Joe Biden’s continued presidential campaign:

One of her top aides, David Simas, a former Obama staff member who oversees her political research, circulated focus-group and polling data to other donors that painted a dire portrait. Several said that Mr. Simas’s research was influential in encouraging them to mobilize against Mr. Biden.
