Maybe don’t look to China for your next VR headset.

Pico, the Chinese VR startup purchased by TikTok owner ByteDance that makes the only direct competitor to the Meta Quest and seemed to be gearing up, is suddenly cutting hundreds of jobs.

Tencent, the world’s largest game company and a tech giant, has reportedly canceled its VR headset and all but shut down its VR division.

Steam will let you use the Sony DualSense Edge’s back buttons in any PC game.

[W]e’re excited to share that the rear buttons of the just-released PlayStation DualSense Edge controller will be supported soon, too!

    PC-grade VR without the PC.

Watch Adi, Tom, and Sean try out Sony’s second-generation virtual reality headset if you’re trying to decide whether the $549 peripheral is worth it.

The launch software lineup is a little light and your PC won’t properly recognize it, but the PSVR 2 at least has an easy setup and one short but impressive title in the form of Horizon Call of the Mountain.

    Atomic purple? Yes please.

I almost wish I’d waited before buying JSAUX’s excellent transparent heatsink backplate for my Steam Deck...because it now comes in better colors, too! Oh BTW: don’t do the RGB mod yet.

“ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the Web.”

When I saw this headline, I figured it was some offhand remark — but no, this entire remarkable essay explores chatbots through the lens of lossy image compression algorithms, and it makes an awful lot of sense. (I’m worrying about bitrot already.)

Oh, and this author also penned the short story that became the award-winning movie Arrival.

Spinning drives will never die as long as they have fans.

10GB/s from PCIe 5.0... but also up to 21K rotations per minute from its tiny fan. I’ll pass! More context at HotHardware.

Nintendo softens the $70 Zelda blow — for subscribers, anyhow.

As Wario64 notes, the Nintendo Switch’s first $70 game is eligible for Nintendo’s “Switch Game Vouchers,” which give Nintendo Switch Online subscribers two full-priced Switch games for $100 flat.

Normally, that works out to $20 off a pair of $60 games — but here, it’s more like “buy Zelda, get another game half-off.” The vouchers expire 12 months after purchase.
