Apple hit with $634 million verdict in patent battle with Masimo.

A federal jury in California sided with medical tech company Masimo in its suit alleging that the Apple Watch infringed on its patent covering low-power pulse oximeter features. The victory hinged on the definition of the term “patient monitor,” which Apple argued only applied to devices that provided continuous monitoring, while the Apple Watch’s blood oxygen features only kick in after 10 minutes of inactivity. This case is separate from the one working its way through the ITC.

Massive Attack’s new music won’t be available on Spotify.

In September, the band announced it would remove its catalog from Spotify due to Daniel Ek’s investment in military AI technology. That appears to be easier said than done. But in 2026, it will begin releasing music on a new label, and the group said it will be available digitally — just not on Spotify.

Android 17 might add native game controller remapping.

Normally, you’re kind of stuck with the button mapping video game developers choose, based on your controller of choice. But Android Authority has found evidence in the latest Android Canary release that Google is adding native remapping. That’s huge for improving accessibility and support for cloud gaming, where titles aren’t usually built with Android in mind.

Co-founder of an AI transcription company claims it was originally just two guys pretending to be AI.

According to Sam Udotong, one of the founders of Fireflies.ai, when the company first started in 2017:

We told our customers there’s an “AI that’ll join a meeting.” In reality it was just me and my co-founder calling in to the meeting sitting there silently and taking notes by hand.

While Udotong claims it was clear to these early beta customers that “there was a human in the loop,” it still raises serious privacy concerns and sounds alarmingly close to flat-out fraud.

All the czar’s horses and all the czar’s men, couldn’t put AIDOL back together again.

The Russian humanoid robot made its big stage debut on Tuesday and took a few uneasy steps before faceplanting. Its handlers quickly dragged it offstage, leaving a trail of shattered robot bits as two others tried to hide the mess behind a black curtain.

Apple is working on new satellite features for the iPhone.

According to Mark Gurman the future of those features is very much up in the air. They would require major upgrades to Globalstar’s network, which Apple relies on. But Globalstar is also deep in talks to be acquired by SpaceX. Still, if Apple can pull these off, it would be a boon to users when traditional 5G isn’t available.

Satellite-powered maps: The company is eyeing bringing satellite connectivity to Apple Maps, allowing users to navigate without cellular or Wi-Fi access.

Richer messaging capabilities: Apple is working on enhanced satellite messaging that supports photos in addition to basic text messages.

“Natural usage” improvements: One of the biggest limitations of Apple’s current system is the need for an unobstructed view of the sky. The company aims to let users stay connected while their iPhone is in a pocket, car or even indoors — eliminating the need to physically point the device toward the sky. This approach is known in the industry as “natural usage.”
